Custom Latex equivalent to Tempur-adapt medium hybrid?

Hello everyone. I’m researching custom latex mattress options to replace a Tempurpedic Adapt medium hybrid queen mattress that I have had for about 4-5 years. I’m relatively happy with the comfort but recently I have had a little lower back and/or hip soreness and so maybe it is time to find something a little firmer. If I had one major complaint with the mattress is that it feels hot in the summer when I keep the house temperature a little warmer than in the winter.

My specs. 5ft 4in, 130 lbs, back sleeper.

My preferences. I travel a lot for work and sleep in a lot of mid-level hotels (e.g. Hilton, Marriot, Westin, etc) and I rarely find a “bad” mattress. If I ever have an issue it is because I find the mattress too soft and I can’t remember the last time I felt a mattress is too firm. If anything my major complaint with hotels are their pillows. As a back sleeper, I’ve optimized the pillow thickness for my bed at home and typically I find pillows too high when traveling.

The DIY style of mattress at MFC is really appealing to me and I am looking for suggestions on what configurations to try. Just go with the Cumulus pocket coil or should I be looking at the Presto? If the Presto what configuration? I realize that the bed will feel different to the memory foam Tempur-pedic, but I am interested in experimenting with this difference.

One thing that might help me decide is how these mattresses are shipped. I prefer to try and set this up myself and so if I understand correctly the Presto layers would be rolled up individually and shipped in 5 boxes? What would the most heavy box weigh for a queen configuation? And I’m guessing that the Cumulus hybrid also ships layers separately (also rolled up) but the pocket coil section doesn’t get “rolled up”? Would the pocket coil layer be able to be maneuvered up stairs by one person?

TIA.

Good morning TorontoBoy!

Welcome the TMU

The vast majority of hotels use coil spring mattress with a plush pillow top. If you enjoy those, then you’re going to prefer the hybrid latex mattresses because coils tend to be less supportive than an all latex mattress.

Our Cumulus Hybrid Latex Mattress is made with a set of 7" coils topped off with a 2" organic dunlop latex layers of 30 ILD medium and one of 20 ILD soft. These 2 layers can be rearranged to slightly change the firmness or you can exchange one or two layers if you prefer a firmer or softer top. The mattress is shipped in layers and here’s what you can expect for a Queen size mattress for the box sizes and weight. : 58x20x20 – 85lbs, 31x14x14 – 27lbs, 30x12x12 – 24lbs, 24x12x12 – 14lbs. I think you will be able to handle this or you can get a friend to help you bring the large box to your bedroom.

As for your Tempur mattress sleeping hot, this is common for memory foam mattresses because they are thermo-sensitive and they absorbs and retains heat. Recently we have introduced the new Ambicool Mattress Protector which helps in cooling down hot mattresses. It features the NASA-developed Outlast® thermo-technology that creates an ideal microclimate for sleep, offering a cool, refreshing touch. The good news is that coils and latex sleep cool in any season.

Hi Mario:

I appreciate the information, especially the description of package size and weights for the Queen Cumulus Hybrid.

Perhaps this is not answerable but do you think the Cumulus in the standard configuration is more firm or less firm than the Tempur-adapt medium hybrid? Or is this not a well posed question because of the very different characteristics between memory foam and latex?

re: Outast. I actually have an Outlast material cover from a different company that I use with my Tempur-pedic in warmer weather. In Spring I will use the Outlast cover. I then will also switch to linen bedding. When it gets warmer I use a Bedjet. And finally when it is very hot I will use an Airweave topper. Yes, it is a lot of work to stay cool with a memory foam bed!

Again thanks for the info. I’m intrigued with the whole DIY mattress movement. My only issue now is to rationalize getting rid of a mattress that is mostly comfortable and not close to end of life.

Good morning TorontoBoy,

Correct, memory foam and latex are two very different sleeping surfaces. One sleeps hot and feels like bread dough while latex is resilient and sleeps neutral. I go though the main differences in this short video I did a few years ago (scroll down to the bottom)

Thanks for sharing how you cool off your Tempur-Pedic, I’m sure others that have the same issue will be happy to find solutions!

There may be no reason to buy a new mattress if you can find the reason why the mattress is giving you back and hip issues. However if you don’t, then you know that their’s great options out there and that a solution might be only a click away!

Hi Mario:

That was a very useful video and thank you for the link to the discount codes. Every little bit helps.

I have two more questions:

For the Presto Queen customizable all latex Queen-sized mattress. How heavy is the box with the core layer, which I assume is the heaviest layer?

I looked through the MFC FAQ and read through TMU material, but I was wondering if you could explain how the Presto customizable all latex Queen would feel compared to the Cumulus Queen hybrid if they were set up to be a similar “firmness.” If there is a link somewhere I missed with this discussion already please just point me to it directly.

I appreciate the info. I bought a Dunlop contour latex pillow from MFC today as thanks!

Best,

Will

Good morning TorontoBoy,

The organic Presto is shipped in loose layers and here are the sizes and weight of the boxes for a Queen:
50x13x13 – 41lbs, 30x15x15 – 26lbs, 30x15x15 – 26lbs, 29x15x15 – 24lbs, 29x15x15 – 24lbs

Comparing the Presto to the Cumulus mattresses

Presto Customizable Organic Dunlop Mattress

The organic Presto will have a consistent, uniform feel throughout. Dunlop latex is naturally dense and tends to be firmer, more supportive, and slightly more rigid than the Cumulus latex hybrid. It has a quick rebound and provides a solid, contoured feel that hugs your body while maintaining good spinal alignment.

Support: Since there’s no coil unit, the support comes entirely from the latex layers. This means it distributes weight evenly and provides a more solid, stable surface.

Motion Transfer: Latex is known for its minimal motion transfer, so you won’t feel disturbances from a partner moving around.

Breathability & Cooling: Dunlop latex has natural airflow properties, but because it doesn’t have open spaces like coil layers, it may feel slightly warmer than a hybrid.

Durability: Since the Presto is an all-latex mattresses it’s very durable and can last 15-20+ years with proper care.

Cumulus Latex Hybrid Mattress

Feel: A latex hybrid with coils will have a more dynamic, responsive feel because of the coil unit underneath the latex layers. The latex on top will still provide a soft, plush, or firm interface (depending on the setup), but the coils beneath add an extra layer of contouring and pressure relief.

Support: The coils provide extra support and bounce, which some people prefer for easier movement on the mattress.

Motion Transfer: While Dunlop latex itself has minimal motion transfer, the coils that are under the latex layers will allow for slightly more movement when compared to the Presto.

Breathability & Cooling: The coil system creates natural airflow channels, which can help dissipate heat better than the Presto. This makes the Cumulus feel cooler overall.

Durability: The Cumulus can also last 15+ years, though the coils will soften slightly over time.

Ultimately, the choice between The Organic Presto and The Cumulus latex hybrid comes down to your personal preference. If you prefer a more uniform and consistent feel, the Presto might be better. If you prefer a bit more bounce and responsiveness, then the Cumulus could be the way to go.

Thank you for the purchase of the Organic Dunlop Latex Contour Pillow and please keep us posted on what you decide to do in the end,

All the best!

Hi Mario:

I’m very close to deciding. I just wanted to confirm shipping times to Toronto (M6G … ). Are both queen-sized Presto (medium firm) and Cumulus Hybrid mattresses “in stock” and will ship out in the standard time without any special delays?

Thank you.

Good morning TorontoBoy,

Yes, mattresses are in stock and will ship according to our Free Shipping policy posted here. It’s important to note that we are out of free pillows until the end of April 2025, but we can send you a free St-Dormeir washable wool mattress protector instead.

Hi Mario:

One more opinion needed. 5’4" 130 lbs. 100% back sleeper. Current mattress is a Tempur-pedic Adapt Medium Hybrid. Do not want to go softer than the current mattress, but could go firmer.

If I go with the Presto full latex what firmness level would be recommended?

So close!

Hi TorontoBoy,

If you use our firmness tool calculator on this page, we suggest you go with the FIRM option for back sleepers.

Does this answer your question?

Hi Mario:

That is great news! Thanks.

It is funny how quickly one goes from “I can probably live with my mattress for another year” to “I need a new mattress now!”

It is sort of like that old chestnut with a frog in a pot of water. If you the water is heated slowly over a long period of time, the frog doesn’t know he is getting cooked. My tempur-pedic has been getting softer over a period of time and I did not realize the lack of support has been affecting my back/sleep. The time to change was probably some months ago. The real crime is why do I need to replacement Tempur-pedic when it is only 4-5 years old.

Best regards.
