Deciding between mattresses

After way too many years I’ve finally decided it was time to replace my very old Beautyrest mattress and appreciate all the great information contained within this site. It’s helped me dwindle down my mattress choices to 3 which is a feat in itself. I’m a stomach/side sleeper so while I like the feel of sinking into the mattress initially but probably need some firmness support. I’ve settled on a hybrid mattress since I like the “bounce” it provides but allows for foam in the comfort layer to give it some stability. I will also say I’m not a fan of memory foam, just seems to be too warm or my comfort. That said I’ve narrowed my search to;

DLX (Jamestown) LatexLux Hybrid

  1. Luxurious Hyperflex Fabric: The journey to comfort begins with this soft, high-performance fabric offering an indulgent feel to your sleep experience.
  2. Airsoft Viscose Fiber: Just below, our plush fiber batting enhances breathability and infuses a layer of gentle softness.
  3. 3/4" LoftAdapt Foam (Density: 1.8 lbs.): Two layers of this conforming foam offer precise pressure relief, expertly adapting to your body’s contours.
  4. 3" Natural Latex: The comfort layer of the mattress houses this adjustable layer, offering soft, medium, or firm feel for a tailored sleep comfort.
  5. 3/4" LinkBridge Transitional Foam (Density: 1.8 lbs.): This vital component is specially designed to bridge comfort and support, easing the transition from the foam layers to the resilient hybrid coils. It not only enhances the overall comfort but also contributes to a smooth, seamless feel throughout the mattress.
  6. 8" Advanced Hybrid Technology Coil System: This advanced innerspring layer offers unmatched support, reducing motion transfer and contributing to the mattress’s longevity.
  7. 3/4" CoreFlex Support Foam (Density: 1.5 lbs.): Offering stability and structural integrity, this layer forms the foundation of the sleep system.
  8. Airsoft Viscose Fiber: An additional layer of cushioning enhances the base, ensuring balanced airflow throughout.
  9. Support Fabric: Encasing the bottom of the construction, this durable fabric provides a sturdy base, completing the sleep system.

The PranaSleep seems to be a well-built, quality mattress using a combination of natural talalay latex and their Everlast foam which seems pretty durable based on the limited information I could find. The biggest drawback with this is cost. It’s by far the most expensive since they require buying their foundation to maintain the warranty.

The other 2 are a bit confusing to me. They are both made by Jamestown mattress here in western NY, The Jamestown label for their brick-and-mortar stores and the DLX their online bed in a box label. In fact, the local store actually had a DLX mattress in the showroom. The descriptions above differ in their information but they seem to be very similar, 2 layers of foam in the quilt layer, 2 layers in the comfort (either ¾ or 1” foam and 3” latex) and coil/base support. The Jamestown mattress is ordered by firmness using either a Talalay 14ILD or a D55, 75, 85 or 95 Dunlop layer. With DLX the selection is based on soft/medium/firm. Both have a zippered top allowing me to change the comfort layer which should provide longer durability which I like. The main differences between them have to do with delivery. Jamestown delivers, sets up and removes the old mattress and DLX does not (Not a deal breaker).

This is where I would like some help. I was able to try out the Prana and Jamestown mattresses and both felt comfortable. They were both soft on top and felt they provided medium support after I laid there for a while. I would assume the DLX to be the same?

• Are the Jamestown/DLX mattresses basically the same? I have to admit the DLX sounds like a better mattress but that could very well be that they’ve done a much better job describing the construction on their website. Maybe the person from DLX can help me with this one.
• Are the materials in one that much better than the others? Comfort and durability.
• Is there a short term/long term issue between the zippered mattresses versus the closed/sewn Prana mattress. Mattress foam sifting, material that may stretch in one more than the other? Looks of one versus the other after 8-10 years?
• I do want an 8/9” foundation to give the mattress height. My box springs are about 18 years old. Will they be OK or do I need new ones?

Appreciate everything I’ve learned here so far. Thanks for the help.

Happy to help. The DLX LatexLux and the Majestic Dream are similar in design but different in specific features. With the DLX, we offer off-the-menu items like the Talalay in 14 ILD and 95 kg/m³ Dunlop for those who want that. Please email [email protected], and we will help determine if it is a good fit.

You are correct. They are both very similar in design and price. The major differences are that the Jamestown mattress is foam-encased and uses a different pocket coil, whereas the DLX has coils edge-to-edge with a narrower coil on the sides for a seating edge. For most people, this will make the mattresses feel different—how much is a bit subjective. This isn’t a good versus bad or a right and wrong decision but a matter of personal preference. The other difference is the support layer: polyfoam on the DLX and an insulator pad on the Jamestown. Again, it’s not about good versus bad but about personal comfort.

As for comparing to other mattresses, we make the mattresses ourselves, so we cut out the middleman and can offer higher quality materials at a significantly lower cost than others.

For folks in Northwest PA and Western NY, we offer local setup and removal. Additionally, we’ve partnered with LoadUp, where we ship the mattress to you via FedEx, and their local partners come out a day or two after receiving the mattress to do the setup and removal. This service isn’t listed on the site at this time, but for those in the know on the MUG, email us with your delivery address, and we can provide a quote for the services.

As for zippers on the mattress, they go back probably farther than the 80s with soft-side water beds, and I know a lot of members here have been using zipper cover designs since the early 2000s. We’ve been making them for over 20 years and haven’t had issues with the zipper designs and have seen others using a zipper mattress design successfully. I don’t think any member here would continue to sell them if they didn’t work. Looking across here and other places online, I don’t recall seeing any complaints, but we could be wrong—won’t be the first and won’t be the last, ha!

Personally, the zipper is an advantage. It affords you the flexibility to adjust the comfort now or in the future.

As for the box spring, we’d definitely recommend getting a new one. You don’t need to buy our foundation (which acts as a box spring replacement), but make sure that it is properly supported. Without the proper support, the mattress will compensate for the lack of support and feel softer and less supportive over time. And it’s not just the foundation or box spring; the frame that supports it needs to be robust.

Thanks again for the information. I think you have me leaning towards your mattress, especially since you mention delivery in western NY assuming you include Rochester in that region.

Are there enough similarities with the Majestic Dream mattress where another visit to their store to give it one last test would be helpful?

Yes, we offer in-home deliver in the Rochester area. For this, please email us directly.

As for revisiting the store, I suggest testing the DLX Premier Hybrid in the store versus the Majestic. Pay attention to the edge support and overall support of the mattresses. They use different comfort layers: 3" performance polyfoam vs. 3" natural latex. This will give you a general idea of the differences and whether they matter to you.

This is just our opinion based on years of experience and may not apply in every case, but it is good general information for anyone reading this. If you find a mattress at a local retail shop that you love and it stands out among the rest and is head and shoulders above anything you’ve tried, we recommend buying it. We’ve found that buyers’ remorse sets in quickly, especially as someone is adjusting to a new mattress, leading to higher dissatisfaction rates.

However, if the mattresses you liked were good but not profoundly better than others, or if you liked two or three mattresses in the store and one was not significantly better than the ones that you liked, we have high satisfaction rates. If the comfort isn’t there initially, we usually get people comfortable on our mattress when we know their height, weight, sleep position, and the mattresses they tested and liked, as well as the previous mattresses they’ve owned, so we can give a solid recommendation.

In this case, if the Majestic stood out among the rest and nothing compared to it in terms of comfort, go with it. If it was comfortable but you found few other mattresses comfortable during your shopping, the DLX could be a viable option.

I apologize, but I focused on the differences between the Majestic and DLX and neglected to talk about Prana. I did some research on the Prana. While they use a different pocket coil than DLX, they use coils to the edge and it is not foam encased like the Majestic. The construction design is different from both the Majestic and Premier. If you liked the Majestic and Prana equally, there is a good chance that you would find a DLX LatexLux or Premier Hybrid comfortable.

I didn’t know which DLX mattress they had in their store so I’d love to give it a try. I will reach out to your customer service if I have any other questions. Thanks again for the additional information.
