So, after thinking about getting a topper to help with our mattress situation and after getting great advice from the community, we decided to take the plunge and buy our very first latex mattress. We decided to go with Sleep EZ because of all the modification and great CS, but we are still a bit uncertain about a few options and would appreciate the help.
Sleeper 1: 175 lbs, stomach sleeper
Sleeper 2: 275 lbs, back/side sleeper (starts on the side, spends 85% of time on the back)
We selected king size, 100% Natural Latex, 10 inch mattress thickness (we are not entirely sure if this is the right selection though) and the website suggested this configuration:
Layer 1: 3 Inch Natural Dunlop, split: Medium + Medium
Layer 2: 3 inch Natural Dunlop, split: Medium + Firm
Layer 3: 3 Inch Natural Dunlop, split: Firm + Extra Firm
We’ll probably go for the wood/slated foundation too, but I am not sure, does it need to sit on top of a metal base? My husband seems to think so and insists on keeping our old one, since the headboard is connected to it. Me, I am not sure that’s a good idea.
I trust the configuration tool knows what it’s doing, having 90% success rate, but still, having a real person check this would be great, especially the bit we are not sure about.
Thank you for reaching out! Based on the information you’ve kindly provided, I completely agree with the recommended configurations.
For sleeper one, who primarily sleeps on their stomach, the medium comfort layer on top is a great choice. Typically, for someone weighing 175 lbs who sleeps on their side or back, we would recommend an S/M/F configuration. However, stomach sleepers need a significantly firmer mattress surface because lying flat on your stomach evenly distributes body weight. If the mattress is too soft, the midsection may sink into the surface, which can result in lower back pain.
For sleeper two, at 275 lbs, the M/F/XF configuration is also ideal. The medium top layer provides the necessary pressure relief, especially for side sleeping, while the firm and extra-firm layers below offer gradual yet sufficient support.
Comfort Exchange Policy
This mattress comes with a 90-day comfort exchange policy, allowing you to exchange layers one at a time (or two split layers) as many times as needed. The first exchange is a flat $30, and subsequent exchanges are charged the cost of shipping (typically $25–$65, depending on location).
Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have any additional questions. Enjoy your new mattress!
Jeremy, thank you SO much for confirming this, I’m really grateful for your insight.
What about the base? We currently have a random metal one from a chain store, but I don’t trust it completely. I’m thinking, since we are getting a new mattress, getting a new base would make sense. My husband on the other hand thinks the current one is fine. What do you think?
An all-latex mattress requires a solid and sturdy foundation with no springs or flex. Suitable options include slatted wood foundations, such as the ones we offer, provided the slats are rigid and spaced no more than 3" apart. A solid platform foundation is also an excellent choice.
If you use a metal foundation, it must be non-flexible and free of gaps wider than 3". Metal foundations made of thin rigid wires are not suitable, as the latex can settle between the wires, leading to damage over time, including tearing of the cover and latex. If your metal foundation has this issue, you can place a piece of 3/4" or thicker plywood on top to create a solid surface.
I was looking at the slated wood foundation and the metal bedframe (my husband would like to keep our headboard), both from your website (why complicate life if it’s not needed ), the only thing I’m worried about is our combined weight of about 475 lbs (dogs included most nights). Would the slated wood still be an option for us, or do you think we should look into a solid platform foundation (if so, do you have any preferred brands, suggestions)?
I promise I am done asking questions after this one.
Our foundations are designed to support up to 1,500 lbs, so they will work perfectly for your needs. Feel free to reach out as often as you’d like if you have any further questions or need additional information. Have a great day!
I’m really grateful for all your help. We started looking at mattress toppers to help us last until June, but a few sleepless nights and some great advice later, we just placed an order, the mattress, the base, the whole lot.
The process was easy and everyone on the chat was extremely helpful. I used to work in CS and I know it’s really hard to juggle calls, chats, emails and I truly admire the focus and dedication.
A special shoutout to @Maverick as well, your detailed answers and insights helped so much and you definitely pointed us in the right direction.
