I am desperately looking for help finding a new mattress. I am disabled and have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, so I deal with chronic pain, partial dislocations, and serious joint instability (amongst many other symptoms). I have hip/pelvis and shoulder instability. I am a side sleeper, but sometimes sleep on my stomach. I am 5’0" and about 155lbs currently. I also sleep incredibly hot and cannot tolerate memory foam (every time I’ve slept on it I end up waking up so drenched in sweat I have to change my clothes and towel off). I also tend to sleep in the same exact spot every night, which has resulted in body impressions/sinking middle forming almost immediately in every bed I’ve had.
Being disabled, my budget is also pretty slim. $900 is the absolute max I can do, and that’s literally all my savings. It’s taken me almost 2 years to save this much, as I’m on a fixed income.
My parents gifted me a brand new goldbond Plush almost 3 years ago to replace my nearly 15 year old ikea mattress, and it has been hellish. I had been researching mattresses for several years (used mattress underground a lot!) and decided on that mattress as it’s from a local maker, used lots of natural materials, and had good reviews from what I could find. I tend to prefer very plush feeling mattresses, but I know I need lots of support to keep my joints in place overnight. This mattress feels hard, and offers very little support. I am able to get some decent sleep if I add my 5 year old SOL soft topper, but I still wake up with extreme lower, middle, and upper back pain. Without the topper I experience hip, knee, and shoulder pain in addition to the back pain.
I’m looking for, ideally, a firm flippable innerspring mattress that I can add a topper or two on top of as a sort of DIY build. I’m really struggling to find anything that has a great return policy in case it doesn’t work out, and also ships to VT without costing nearly half my budget. I absolutely need a good return/exchange policy because at this point, I have no clue what’s actually going to work for me. I’ve been researching for years now, and when I thought I’d made the perfect choice I ended up with a $1700 mattress that hurt just as bad as my old one with zero return/exchange policy and I’ve been saving up since then to replace it. I can’t afford to buy multiples or risk spending my entire budget and then be stuck with another bed that leaves me in tears most mornings.
I’m open to any and all help, but it’s important that my budget is respected.
Hi there c1shuten,
Welcome to the Mattress Underground!
I understand that your situation is difficult, and finding the right mattress for your needs can feel like an overwhelming challenge. I can see why your parents may have thought a plush mattress might be the answer, but unfortunately, a soft plush mattress is generally the opposite of what’s best for someone with EDS. A mattress that is too soft can contribute to further instability, especially with the chronic pain and joint issues you’re dealing with.
I highly recommend reaching out to @BackScience, as they specialize in helping individuals with conditions like EDS. While their solutions might not fit within your current budget, they have a deep understanding of the specific requirements for someone with your health concerns, and could provide invaluable guidance.
I understand the financial constraints you’re facing. While a tight budget may be a limiting factor, sometimes it’s important to prioritize finding the right solution first, and then tackling the finances. It may take additional time to save up or explore options that your budget can handle. I know that might sound a bit harsh or counterintuitive, but investing in the right mattress could prevent further pain and discomfort, which might save you more in the long run. While there are never any guarantees, when you work with folks who have been there and done that before, it makes the solution to the problem more promising.
This situation is one that may need an entire picture to be drawn before just throwing caution to the wind and hoping for the best.
My suggestion would be to collaborate with someone who will focus on understanding what kind of mattress will genuinely work for your condition, and then see how that can be fit into the budget, or perhaps find something that is a solution that will work for a suitable amount of time to get you through this financial time period.
I hope @BackScience can offer some specific recommendations, as they deal with these types of issues regularly.
Best of luck, and I hope you find a solution that brings you relief soon!
Maverick
I am happy to lend my experience as a mattress consultant and designer over the last 20 plus years. I can understand why it would seem on the surface that a flippable mattress would make it last longer, since with each flip, it seems to renew the mattress feel. The problem comes from the fact that in order for the mattress to be flippable, it has to have a soft side on both sides of the mattress, which means that there is always a soft spot under your mattress. That is why it seems like each flip renews the mattress feel, but then after a couple of weeks, the mattress starts to sag again as it settles into the softer spot below. That said, if you do not use much fiber and foam over the coils, you can make the mattress flappable, provided you are willing to add removable topper(s) that won’t go under the mattress, only over as you flip it each time. So, while we don’t normally make them that way since we are not sure how well the toppers will blend with the coil system, we can make one for you to give you what you are looking for. It would be a custom design, but I think we can come in close to your budget and still get you the same high-end USA made steel coils that we use for Back Science, which means you would have an over 1000 count individually wrapped Quantum edge innerspring system that should give you the best underlying support system.

Yes, I am looking at flippable mainly because I need a mattress that will last as long as possible. My financial situation is tricky as I’m on a fixed income. My current savings can’t expand much without risking losing my health insurance, which would obviously put me in a much more serious bind.
I am definitely interested and would love to see what could be worked out. I currently have a 3" sleep on latex soft topper, but it does need replacing. I was hoping to find something enough under my budget to replace that, as well.
My current mattress is Plush, but feels quite hard while also being unsupportive.
Our Back Science Essentials mattress could come in around your budget and definitely offers a far better support structure and durability that we cover with a double the strength warranty that starts with only 3/4 inch of sag, so we do feel it will stand the test of time. It also does a great job of dissipating heat, so that is a bonus for you, as well as the ability to provide more mid-section support. I realize that it is not a coil design, but you will see that it really does offer an amazing combination of support and pressure relief. Feel free to take a deeper look at the Back Science Essentials mattress, as it has a 365 Night trial with completely free modifications and a full no-cost exchange or return of the mattress if for some reason it is not working and we can’t find a way to get it to properly suit your needs.
Wishing you the best of health,
Dr. Rick Swartzburg, D.C.
I’m looking at the @EngineeredSleep classic hybrid in 8" simple firm and wondering what the comfort foam layer is? And also how much it weighs. I’m also interested in the duo mattress, but would need to figure out how to finance/afford it. I would be adding a latex topper to the firm hybrid mattress, otherwise.
I’m also considering using financing and perhaps trying a @Sleep_EZ all latex build, but the website is kinda confusing and I’m unsure what mattress build would be best for me.
