I want a 6in or less pocket coil system for core support. I’m 175Lb 5’10, side and stomach sleeper, but do appreciate a firmer mattress with a plush pillow topper. This coil system will be used in the mattress layer. My plan is to harvest all the coils out and stitch them into long strips of calico pockets, upholstery tie them together to form a calico pocket coil layer.
The comfort layers around the center coil support layer will be wool batting and horse hair. With a wool quilted linen mattress cover. I plan to tuft the mattress.

Latexsleep.com 6" Elite Edge Pocket Coil. 1041 coils per Queen. Is this a L&P Quantum Edge Elite Pocket Coil? What gauge wire? Edge coils different gauge, or different diameter?
Any other 6in DIY pocket coil layers for sale online that I have missed? What are the sleep differences between these options? Recommendations? Wool batting and horse hair might be more firm than latex foam layers that most DIY projects on this site use for comfort layers above the coil support layer.
You are not going to find 6” coils anywhere but from these two AZ based companies.
Do you really want to use horse hair? Very expensive and hard to source this material. Almost all horsehair comes from slaughter houses from Mexico/Argentia. It is the same case with Hastens/Vispring. Albanyfoam and bandmupholsterysupply sell horsehair.
Layout an inch of wool batting, then add 4 inches of horse hair, then add another inch of wool batting on top of it. That’s how these are laid out. Tufting is necessary, as these fibers (at least horse hair) shift. Someone made a DIY horsehair topper on reddit, search there for more instructions. Topper is doable as a DIY.
Or just get 2” talalay toppers and add wool batting. Thats another way. Wool batting may not need tufting, as they are already rolled.
The horsetail hair is the most expensive part of this mattress, probably equal to everything else combined. I am getting it from Europe.
Thank you for the advice, what you described, is basically exactly what I am doing. I am making this mattress so I can flip it. So the layers above the coil support layer will be reversed on the other side of the coils. Full size mattress.

All in a heavy linen twill case, quilted with 1in of Joma wool batting in all sides. Tufted. Might side tuft if I can be bothered(yet to be determined).
The coil support layer is what I’m not 100% certain. Because I am putting a good amount of horsehair and wool fiber around the coil layer. I don’t really want 8in coil support layer. Think the mattress is going to get too tall.
I’m wondering if the caliber edge is going to be too firm. Though I am leaning in that direction.
Read a lot of people find the Dynamic edge 16 gauge center coils too soft. And the 15 gauge coils around the edge too rigid. The Elite Edge from Latexsleep, I think is 15 gauge in the center with narrower diameter 16 gauge around the edge for edge support. It’s also $480 shipped for a full. Almost $200 more than the other options.
I just wanted to chime in and let you both know we switched to the 6” Dynamic Edge coils by Arizona Healthcare (I have no idea why that’s their company name) and the coil gauges are 12 and 13.
Gauge alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Number of pockets in a mattress, number of turns(coils) in each coil, how much pre-loaded each spring, etc–all these things matter. Even the construction also matters. That’s why it is hard to compare by gauge alone.
Thicker gauge edge coils are alternative to foam encasement. In open coil mattresses, border rods with edge guards solve this problem. Do you sit on the edges of your mattress? Answer to that question dictates whether you want thicker gauge edge coils or not.
I suggest you put insulator pad or uhaul furniture pad between wool batting and coils. Use some tack glue. Some folks also put 0.5” to 1” dacron/densified fiber pad. It is all your choice.
Love to see how you are going to tuft the whole mattress, without a tufting machine that compresses the mattress.
So another post on here said the dynamic edge had 16 gauge center coils and 15 gauge outer, not 12 and 13.
So I am still trying to determine which of the three would best suit me.
