DIY 8" or in-a-box 10-12"

Hi,
I have been searching for several weeks now but I face a little uncertainty to make the final decision.

Basically I am torn between going with already made mattress(Douglas Alpine or Octave Mirage) or a DIY (HD foam + Latex) from MFC (local canada seller).
about me: 2 people , side and back sleepers, about 100lbs and 160lbs, mid 40’s , some back/hip and shoulder tension.
Currently sleeping on a 10y IKEA Myrbacka (latex/foam).

The in-a-box look very nice, great marketing and creativity around giving their foam some properties and cool name, but are they as good as it seem ?

  • I like/dislike the in-a-box, for:

    • they come complete, with a cover and other goodies.
    • 365 trials
    • cheaper for a bulkier mattress ( at least 11" )
    • not clear if they are that performant, reviews possibly compromised.
  • I like/dislike the DIY from MFC, for:

    • I know exactly what’s inside (6" HD foam + 2" soft latex)
    • real Latex
    • only 8" ( but is that a problem? )
    • can get pricier, no cover included, no trials

The price for all these is around $1,000 (cad).

I think a fundamental question I have, is I don’t know what type of mat we need.
I tried an hybrid (silk n snow organic) and it felt great, little bouncy and comfy, compared to a full foam that are not so “responsive”.

I am concerned the DIY (foam+latex) may feel more like a full foam rather than an hybrid ?
But I am really attracted by the simplicity/quality vs the big brands stuff/gimmicks.

Can anyone instruct me on what to expect on the DIY since I cannot try it ?
And how I could make a sound decision .

Thank you for reading

Order a nest and wild hybrid, no im not affiliated. They ahve a 10% discount on the site. Its an easy recommend do it all bed with a great spring layer (quadcoil), cooling cover, open cell breathable latex/memory foam top layer, and high density memory foam support layer

There are many awesome bed in a box brands btw. Diy can be rewarding but there’s trial and error involved. Beds in boxes that i have purchased are the glacier apex, and the nest and wild for my parents. I also constructed my own diy bed with pocketspringstore.com 8" 14.75 springs, with the 3" quad mini spring layer as a transition, and then i bought a top layer of that memory/latex foam from the owner of nest and wild and thats what i use as my comfort layer. Yes i love that hybrid foam.

thanks, I dont think it s available in canada

Ok, well there are a lot of good beds in boxes. Naplab.com has a full list of beds. Even though glacier is a memory foam mattress, it doesnt sink in like crazy so i love their beds too, even standard should be a really good bed.

Another recommendation if they ship to you would be brooklyn bedding copperflex pro. Its a perfect medium, very good value bed. Usually can get it for about $930 for a queen

Yes I have read probably all Canadian reviews from naplab and this confused me even more lol,
Then you read another review from reddit or another site and it’s different
This is why the forum is my most reliable source I think.

I will look into the options you listed Gene, thanks, even though I dont think it s available here.

I wish there were a way to see what all mattresses you would be able to get in a box because id really like to research those and see which to help you pick

Okay i looked on the canadian options on naplab. What he listed are built similar. The endy medium firm looked pretty good to me. There werent many hybrid options from what i saw.

I tried the Endy medium-firm, it was ok but not awesome.

But yes I shortlisted already in my initial post:

Are you able to order from Amazon?

Changing my post to different category to get other answers,
I am not seeking other choices of mat than what is available in Canada (no US, no amazon ).

I’m trying to figure if the DIY will be a good fit as I don’t know what to expect or if branded mat is best .
I d like to give the DIY a shot but is 8" enough really ?
Will there be enough Edge support ?

I am thinking enclosing the 6" base and the 2" top in the same cover because I happen to have a 8" cover already, is that a bad idea ?

Thanks for any help

Naplab reviews make no sense to me. Especially their motion isolation ratings. They will rate one bed good and another poorly, and the videos either look identical, or you can see tons of motion in the supposedly good one, and half of them they have a beaker of liquid on the other side of the bed and half of them it’s another ball. They somehow attach numbers to those measurements, but they rated the avocado great for motion isolation when you can see a shock wave running over the mattress in the video. And I laid on one and it had terrible motion isolation.

Ye exactly , that s the what confuses people so much .
Do you know if a DIY made of 6” HD (40ilb) and 2” latex 20ilb is on par with budget mattress (hybrid , foam , etc ) ?

I agree with whats said above. I used his reviews as suggestion, then weighed all the options and came to my own conclusion and got lucky on the final pick.

The only thing i was thinking about the diy option is that a 6" foam with a 2" topper doesnt have much transition layer, but it could still feel pretty good. 40ild seems like a moderate usable firmness.

Good morning nic_van_808

A 6" firm Dunlop latex core with either a 2" soft or medium Dunlop latex top will outperform most beds in box. In order to determine if 8" is enough material for you can you please share the weight of the people that will be sleeping on the mattress and their sleeping positions?

Edge support is not really an issue with Dunlop latex because of it’s density and high resilience.

Thanks Mario,
I think the 6" core quoted is a HD foam (40ILD) not Dunlop.
A 6" Latex must be pretty expensive I am afraid.

ok, in terms of sleepers,

  • weight: wife abt 110lbs (50kg), me 165lbs(75kg).
  • positions: wife - back80% / side 20% ; me - a bit of all , I enjoy some stomach sleep sometimes but mostly side.

Hi Nic,

An 8" mattress will work well for both of you. You are both lightweight and since you mostly sleep on your back or stomach, then you will find comfort and support in that mattress.

For the core you can choose either the 2lb HD foam or the the higher quality 2.75lb HR foam. Both will give you around 10 years of use and are excellent support cores for a tight budget.

Did I answer all your questions?

Please let me know if you need any further information.

All the Best!

Mario

Thank you Mario,
This is all new to me to choose my type of foam and different layers VS just buying an already made in factory .

I like the idea of building from quality sourced materials like you carry at MFC.

It is almost too good for me to believe it can be as or even more comfortable .

I think I just need to be sure this will be comfortable since I believe there is no return possible .

Thank you
