DIY advice needed

Hello Gurus,
I would appreciate some advice
I am currently sleeping on our daughter’s mattress. It is an old Clean Bedroom Savvy Rest Tranquility. Must be 15 years old at least… it’s still in good shape but an odd size (long boring story). It is two 3" Medium Talalay (I think) layers, on top of which I have 2" Talalay soft topper. All of this rests on 1" Coconut Coir pad. So: Bottom to top: 6" of Medium Talalay in 2 pieces, 2" of Soft Talalay. It’s pretty comfortable but i’m tossing and turning too much

The issue is: the size. It’s too short, plus the tossing and turning. I have managed a rube-goldberg temporary fix for the size issue. I am thinking to replace with a full size set up. I am 5’3" weigh 130-135 most of the time. Am a mostly tummy sleeper, though I always start out on my side and have pretty broad shoulders for a woman.

I tried Dunlop a year or so ago for other reasons. When it’s near my body (like in a topper) it is too much. Like it won’t let me in. I like Talalay. I only need two 3" pieces in a real Full size. I am quite certain I need 3" of medium talalay somewhere in the setup. I wonder if a 3" Dunlop layer on bottom would work… will I feel it? Or maybe 3" Firm Talalay just below the topper. I just don’t know.

I could get SOL’s Medium because I love their return policy as well as their customer service. Or I could try LMF’s Medium or Firm Talalay. The ILD of the SOL medium Dunlop is 34. The ILD of the LMF firm Talalay is 38.

Basically I think I need to know if at my weight, how much i will feel the base layer below the 5" of talalay on which I sleep.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hester,
My head is spinning on this one. LOL, I keep reading it over and over, trying to wrap my head around it, just not sinking in my brain. I moved it to the “talk to the Experts” hoping that @Latex_Mattress_Fact1 , @Arizona_Premium or @TheCleanBedroom will chime in as they always have the best advice in these situations. I would encourage you to utilize their products. Independently, they know their products best, and are readily available to jump in and put you on the right track at each step of the way. Our TM’s are truly wonderful folks and always ready to help.

Looking at your set-up.

So, your Savvy R T, has a base layer of
1" Coir Pad, above that
2 - 3" layers of Medium Talalay, and on top of that a
2" Talalay (soft) topper.
So basically a
9" set-up.

I know you stated you tried Dunlop but didn’t like it. I will take that to mean it was too firm for you as it “won’t let you in.” A couple of things. Yes, two pieces of latex, One Dunlop the other Talalay. Both an ILD of say 34, for a very light weight sleeper will be indistinguishable for most light weight sleepers. Although Talalay is more uniform in density throughout the layer vs Dunlop which tends to be bottom heavy and denser as you go deeper into the layer (assume your body contours that deep). If the initial 6" slap of Dunlop that measured 34, has it sliced at the top 2" or 3," it is not likely to be as firm as if you got a slap from the bottom half of that “block.” This happens when Dunlop blocks of foam are produced the heavier particles sink to the bottom of the block and therefore the bottom of the block is significantly denser than the top half, whereas the talalay process keeps the density more uniform throughout the block of foam.

I would offer that an ILD of 34 is more medium-firm rather than medium. I think that @Arizona_Premium, @Latex_Mattress_Fact1 or @TheCleanBedroom might offer a better assessment of whether the difference between the 34ILD and 38ILD is going to have a very noticeable difference. I would say probably not, but these guys, live, breath and sleep these foams, so I would take their word for it as they truly know best.

While it doesn’t necessarily matter if you buy one layer here and one there, I am not someone, when it comes to this, would do it that way. I would stick with one of the TM’s mentioned as it will make it easier to evaluate and solve issues as you move through the process. No one really wants to speak about another product (even the same material) as each company knows their inventory and specs and can speak competently about the product they have provided.

I would tend to recommend a firmer support core layer above any coir base you use. I just feel the denser and firmer the core, the longer lasting and more support it will provide for your body (even if it is a little over firm), and provide support for the foam layers above it. Then you can adjust comfort layers as you move up the height of the mattress.

A medium bottom comfort layer with a medium or medium-soft upper comfort layer (or topper) should be enough that the only thing that firm support layer is going to do, is be a great support for the entire set up. I believe that your weight is not going to “feel” that firmer support layer with respect to the way you posed the question. Which in my mind is exactly what you want to happen. Support without “feeling it.” It is just there working for your benefit.

I know it sounds confusing, but not so much. When you season your meat, chicken or fish, for a meal, you want to taste the protein, and don’t want to be overpowered by the seasoning. Same with the mattress, you want to lie on it without feeling that overwhelming firmness or plushness, you just want your body to feel rather neutral.

I know I keep saying it, but you may be happier staying in one supplier lane. Most of the TM’s have a vested interest in nailing your system down to your liking (as difficult as that may be as everyone is different) because who wants to face someone they have worked hard to evaluate and not meet their needs. They do this so often, there is rarely a case they have not seen or deal with.

All the best,
Norm

Thanks so much, Norm
I am going to stick w LMF, since Richard has been very responsive and helpful. I"m probably going to get a Firm and a Medium from them. Unless you / he thinks 2 firm layers. Your post was extremely helpful to me and confirmed what I was thinking.
Again, Thank you

I think you should stick with medium over firm. In that case. Lets see what LMF says.

Hi hester,
Glad to hear you have gotten some good wear out of your Savvy Rest Tranquility. I would confirm everything Maverick said - since you’ve settled on LMF, stick with them - much less complicated. Although we are always glad to help, of course. The firm layer on the bottom is a support layer, you should still be able to have some ‘give’ if the next layers are less firm. Maverick is correct about a firm base layer providing more support for the other layers as well as for your body. Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much. I actually contacted TCB to ask about that mattress, which I believe was Talalay tho the tops and bottoms of each 3" piece look different (one side with larger holes and a tad firmer than the other w smaller holes and a tad softer)

. I also learned that TCB no longer uses Talalay.
Thanks again for your help
