DIY Hybrid Mattress Issues

Hello,

I built a DIY split queen Hybrid Mattress with the following configuration from top to bottom:

2" 22 ILD tally latex topper
Split 3" Firm(38 ILD) / Medium (28 ILD) Talalay latex
8" Quantum edge elite bolsa coils

The mattress topper suits above the mattress cover. Everything is on a frame with slats.

I have yet to find a configuration that’s comfortable for me ( 6’2" 170lb back sleeper) and my wife (5’3" 115lb all around sleeper). The firm side with the topper feels too soft. If I sleep on the firm or the medium side without the topper, they feel too hard. In the past I’ve tried 1’ and 2" Dunlop toppers, but they didn’t really help. It feels like my hips are sinking in too much. Maybe the coils are too soft?

I’ve been sleeping in my son’s twin bed which feels like I’m sitting on top of the mattress and I’ve been sleeping way better. I’m not sure of the brand.

I’m wondering if there’s any way to salvage this setup without buying a premade. My wife has been very understanding, but never love the mattress.

I’m considering just buying a premade DLX or something with a 120 night trial and being done with this headache.

If anyone has any insights or ideas I would be very appreciative.

Thanks.

We’re not experts in DIY setups, but if you haven’t already, it might be worth trying just the 2" layer over the pocket coil, and separately, just the 3" layer over the pocket coil. Even if the cover feels a bit baggy, it’s still a helpful test if you haven’t done it yet.

We’d also suggest experimenting with placing the 2" and 3" layers under the pocket coil so for example, try 2" on the bottom, then the pocket coil, and the 3" on top as the comfort layer. You might even consider sleeping directly on the pocket coil without any latex just the cover to isolate how it feels.

Treat it like a science experiment and control one variable at a time and take notes on how each configuration feels. I know many of the MUGsters are really helpful in this space, like Arizona Premium.

Thanks for considering DLX hybrid mattresses. We’re happy to help guide you and determine if one of our mattresses might be a good fit for you.

Do you happen to know the brand, model name, and firmness rating of the mattresses you used before the DIY setup and what you liked or disliked about it?

And is there any chance you could find more info on your son’s mattress? If you don’t know the brand, feel free to send a picture. See if the law tag is still attached and let us know how tall the mattress is. That usually gives us a better sense of what might work.
