Hello all! Input from the experts please? Hopefully I’ve laid it out clearly. ![]()
Purpose:
- The first build, bought and tested as a king size, will, after 30 days of testing as my primary mattress, but cut down to what I call an “RV Olympic Queen” (cutting the 80” down to 66”) and moved to an RV.
- Meaning weight and height must both be controlled, springs are out, and I’m going to have the knit cover altered in length from 80” to 66”.
- If it’s good enough I will immediately buy it again with 2.8lb density in the core to replace my 21 year old 9” Talalay from Sleep Science.
- Here there are no real limits, but I don’t care for tall mattresses and don’t believe there is value in them once we crack 9” with quality components.
Sleepers:
6’1” @ 240 and 5’ 4” @140, both 90% side sleepers. I dislike the feel of memory foam and appreciate the movement isolation and feel of Latex. Not that either of us are “oh my god, there was a pea in my mattress” picky.
Reference:
We both love the Sleep Science we have now (3” soft, 3” + 3” firm, firm side up). However, I don’t believe the “firm” was ever more then medium/firm. If it has a weakness it’s that it could have used an inch of plushness, but the 3” of “soft” was, to me, a bit too soft. Thus, btw, the 2” of “Medium” Talalay as a likely tuning option in the below proposed build.
I might, should the situation warrant it, tune to “his” and “hers” but so far our mass/sleeping inch has seemed to be close enough.
Questions:
- The goal was to create something that’s underlying nature is medium firm, yet exceptionally tunable without excessive tuning cost. Did I hit that?
- What do you think I screwed up?
- What would you improve?
- Is Foam Factory good to go?
- Other providers that are cost effective and G2G?
- Why in goodness sake does nobody make a 1” Talalay topper in something like a 20 ILD?
*How does one build some edge stiffness into a mattress?
