DIY Latex Hybrid build for person with low back issues

We purchased a Beautyrest Black Harmony Diamond Series medium 4 years ago and the foam has already failed. It was causing both of us serious lower back pain. We tried the warranty route and we’re denied since it hadn’t failed enough. We assumed that the springs in the mattress would still be good, so we pulled all of the foam out of the mattress including the foam below the springs. The springs appeared to be level and there were no visual issues with them so we started trying to build a DIY mattress on top of them. As many here know there is a ton of trial and error with a DIY build. We have been doing just that for many weeks now without much luck so I’m hoping to get some thoughts here on what may be our next best trial. Our challenge on all permutations so far has been that I seem to have a very small range where my lower back isn’t painful. Too hard or too soft and I wake up in pain and the slightest changes seem to put us on one side or the other. The 2 set ups that seem to be closest are

Too soft set up bottom to top:

Beautyrest springs

1" medium latex from SOL

1.5" memory foam (sinweek is the brand cheap stuff from Amazon we already had)

2" soft latex from SOL

Too Hard set up bottom to top

beautyrest springs

1" medium latex from SOL

2" soft latex from SOL

we also tried without the medium didn’t seem to make much of a difference both options were close but still too hard

I think we need some new options to try, would a 3” soft from SOL be what is needed – would that still be too hard? Should we look at buying a Talalay topper in either 2” or 3”. We need a way to add a little soft to the too hard option while not losing the support it provides. Do we need to just give up on the used springs could they be the issue? They seem fine but maybe I’m missing something?

I always recommend going with Talalay for the top layer if you sleep on your side at all. It’s just more pressure relieving than dunlop. Soft Talalay will feel softer than the equivalent dunlop so I would go with that.

I know there are too many personal variables for you to know what will work but what would you suggest we try first? We are thinking about starting with soft since it is what seems to be the issue. In looking at your site it appears there are 2 different soft options 14 and 19, with our weight would you recommend we go with 19?

Do you sleep with a pillow under your knees when on your back? Between your knees when sleeping on your side? Both of those can help relieve pressure on the back.

I did try that last night and it seemed to help some but the bed was still too hard in the current configuration we are using.

My solution to back pain was a DIY hemp hull mattress topper. Just pour your hulls into a stretchy topper cover, zip it closed and smooth it level with a few sweeps of your arms.
