I’m down a rabbit hole recently trying to DIY a latex or latex/foam combo mattress. My question is why thicker than 6"?
I recently went to a local high end matress supply store in my city which was quoting me $1800cad for a 6" thick latex medium (29ild I believe) mattress. It was extremely comfortable on my back. Upon further investigation I learned they just use dunlop latex and their own specialty mattress encasement.
I shopped around and have found I can buy 2x3" latex dunlop toppers from foamfactory aka foambymail for $380usd plus a sleepez cotton/wool zippered mattress encasement for $200usd.
What am I missing here? Is 6" of topper sufficient for an entire matrress for a 160lb/5’8" back/ stomach sleeper. Why does everybody have 10-16" thick mattresses?
My other question would be - to save money could I use 3" LuxHD memory foam base (50 ild) with the 3" dunlop 29ild topper and would that feel nearly identical, or is 3" not sufficient?
Hi Jeb and welcome to the forums and thanks for reaching out on this! First I’d to mention that there’s no wrong to set up a mattress as long as you’re comfortable. We have some customers that sleep on just 3" of extra firm Dunlop.
Generally speaking, though, when you’re going below 9" of latex or foam or whatever, it becomes more difficult to achieve the right combination of both pressure relief and back support. It’s normally all back support or all pressure relief, but it’s to get a good balance of both.
If you get one of our zippered covers, please keep in mind that if you start with a 6" cover and 6" mattress but find that you need to add more components to the mattress, you could add a topper of course, or you can ship us the cover and we’ll alter it to hold an extra 2", 3", etc. We wouldn’t charge anything for the alteration, although we would ask you to pay the cost of shipping to and from your location.
I think using 3" of HD foam is a great idea! It’s a good way to save some money and end up with a lighter mattress. It won’t last quite as long as Dunlop, but you should hopefully get a good 10 years out of it as long as you buy a quality foam.
