DIY mattress for side sleeper with neck problems

Hi,
I’m looking to buy a new mattress for a king bed. I tend to sleep on the side (maybe 70%), but sometimes also on stomach or back (15% each). 5’-7", 220 pounds :frowning:
I currently have a IKEA Loenset slatted bed base. New bed. Before I had an IKEA “FIRM” Sultan Hogla.
I often have tension in my neck and from that headaches, especially if I sleep longer than 7 hours or so. Certainly need a new mattress ASAP.
Since I’m in Long Island, the choice is good suppliers locally is rather bad. So I figured I would go DIY, because then I would know what I get, can modify without throwing everything out, and save a couple of bucks too.

My current plan would be to go either with a pocket coil base, maybe the Bolsa. Then 3 inch of firm natural Dunlop and then 2 inch of medium Talalay. I guess soft isn’t great for my weight.
Alternatively, I’m thinking about a Dunlop core with just a (3 inch?) medium talalay on top. But I think for “KING” it would be two pieces, right?

Does this make sense? Any recommendations?
Thank you!

Thank you for your interest in our products. Either of your suggested builds will work. Based on your info I would choose the Medium dunlop with medium talalay on top of the coil instead of firm. I’m afraid that would be too firm for a side sleeper of your weight. If you went with all latex then choose the Medium dunlop core, since those run a little firm anyway, topped with the 3" Medium Talalay. I’ll be out of town until Tuesday so if you respond back don’t think I’m avoiding you because I will answer when I get back.

Hi Ken,
Thank you, hope you had a good trip!

I’m a little bit surprised that you would recommend the medium. Isn’t my BMI too high for that? Or is the dunlop medium medium-firm anyway?

Not for a side sleeper and dunlop does run on the firm side.
