Going down the rabbit hole of purchasing a new mattress, and have gotten completely lost in all of the different options. After what feels like days of research, I think I’ve landed on doing a DIY bed, but wanted to check in here to see what the experts recommend.
Myself: 5’8 155lb stomach sleeper. Bad neck and back pain (probably from cheap mattresses)
Wife: 5’4 120lb side and stomach sleeper
Bed Size: Queen
This is the build I’ve been leaning towards, is there any holes in this build? Am i going down the wrong path completely? I originally was going to go full latex, but with my wife being a side sleeper i though the Hybrid option would be better.
Comfort Layer - 3" Soft Talalay
Comfort Layer - 2" Medium Dunlop
Support Layer - 8" Quad Coils - 15.5g (Standard Sides)
Layer below coils - Wool Batting or 1" Lux HQ Foam (Not sure about this layer?)
Cover - 15" Plush bamboo cover
Honestly that looks like it would be too soft for you as a stomach sleeper. My only advice would be to change the top layer to medium on your side and soft on your partner’s side. Outside of that, there’s nothing about the build that says it might not work for you.

Got it! I was going to purchase the comfort layers through you guys (DIYMattress.com) and they mentioned they could split the layers for me so awesome.
What about a layer below the coils? Do you recommend a foam layer? I’ve seen others mentioned wool, but I’m not sure what kind of wool i would look for this layer. Is this layer necessary? The mattress will be sitting on a very strong platform bed with 2" slat spacing.
Having an inch of foam under the coils would keep the coils from digging into the cover over time, so it definitely wouldn’t hurt anything.
Yes, just order the soft layer but mention in the comments section at checkout that you want us to make it half-soft half-medium. I recommend splitting the 2" medium Dunlop layer as well, just in case one of you wants to change the firmness on their side without affecting the other side.

If you’re using slats, you want some firm support under the coils. I would say wool batting isnt enough. Enough for a solid platform underneath, but not a slatted system.
