Hello,

Hello! I am looking into making my own Ultimate Hybrid Latex mattress… Pocket coil base with Latex on top. I have two questions:

  1. my wife and I both prefer a different firmness. So I’m planning on two twin xl talalay 3" toppers, one medium, one soft. Any issues there?

  2. I was thinking of doing the pocket coils on bottom, then a firm layer of 3" latex, and finally the 3" soft/medium split top. Would the middle latex layer do anything for me, or is it a waste of money? Any difference between an extra layer of latex or would the top 3" layers of latex directly on top of pocket coils be enough for a very nice mattress?

We have had an Ultimate Hybrid from Arizona Premium Mattress for about 6 months and it has 3 inches of medium Dunlop over the coils, plus their cover with 1 inch of wool. We love it. It is very comfortable as we like firm to medium firm. We have the zoned coil system you can see on their web site.

I do not think you need the extra 3 inches of foam, and it may detract from the coil support, which is great. I think APM does sell them with split firmness foam layers. I recommend you call them and speak to Ken about your needs. Do you really save that much building your own?

We do dual firmness 3" layers all the time and unless you just want a taller mattress I see no need for the extra layer. Choose the King topper and pick one of the firmness choices. During checkout you will see a comment section which is where you can write “Please make this topper dual firmness” and write in your2 choices. Thank you for considering our products.

Hi there,
Ken from APM actually suggested that I get two 3" layers of latex over the coils because of my high BMI, so I think this depends on each person’s body type. The extra layer keeps me from sinking into the coil, which wouldn’t feel comfortable. We still kept a high ILD layer on top of the coils to keep the support, but put a second lower ILD layer as the comfort layer. From what I can tell, it seems to be the more you weigh the more layers you will want because of how far you sink down. If you are an average weight than the single layer of latex should be just fine.
