DLX Classic Medium or Firm? Side Sleeper Advice Needed!

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on choosing between the medium or firm version of the DLX Classic mattress. Here’s a bit about my situation:

• Me: 5’6”, 168 lbs, side sleeper.

• Husband: 5’8”, 180 lbs, also a side sleeper.

• Current mattress: Beautyrest Black L Class Medium (4 years old).

• Issues: It’s dipping where my hips are, causing lower back pain. Initially, it felt great for my hips and body, but it was a bit too firm on my shoulders and neck. I ended up using a memory foam pad under my shoulders for relief.

I like that the DLX Classic is flippable, but I’m unsure about the firmness level. My top priorities are proper hip support to prevent dipping and enough comfort for my shoulders as a side sleeper. Does anyone have experience with the DLX Classic medium vs. firm? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Also- any experiences with warranty on Beautyrest mattress?

Thanks!

Hi Hfaust245,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround and Happy Holidays.

Choosing between the medium and firm versions of the DLX Classic mattress largely depends on your preferences for support and comfort, particularly as side sleepers. For example I am 6’ 220 and wife is 5’4 135 and we sleep on a Plank Luxe, a much firmer mattress. No issues at all, and love the sleep on top of the mattress firmness. I have experimented with a few different toppers over the past 2 years with this mattress, not necessarily for the comfort aspects, but just to try different toppers to be able to speak about the experience first hand.

Since you mentioned that your current mattress is dipping at your hips, this could always be a concern to address with the any new mattress. With a DLX, that is unlikely. Like any product out there, the better the quality, the more logical and thought out construction, the better the chances of experiencing compromising issues.

A firmer mattress (DLX Classic Firm) generally provides better support for your hips and lower back, reducing the likelihood of sinking too much into the bed, which could help prevent further back pain. Since I tend to favor leaning firm on a mattress, and supplementing with a topper if necessary, that would be my recommendation. Your own personal experiences can help guide you, but it is clear you have had some experiences already. You BR is only 4 years old and you are experiencing some issues, these two videos BeautyRest Black, and yet another. As you can see, it doesnt matter which series. Many of them have the same issues. As mentioned in the videos and your own experience, it is not a happy place to be as both videos explain why.

If you feel like a firm mattress would be too uncomfortable for your shoulders, the medium version may strike a better balance between support for your hips and comfort for your shoulders. The one thing you will no have to deal with here is the fact that a good quality mattress will have that balance of support necessary for support and a logically constructed comfort layer, that with have the right amount of cushion so you are not sinking like the titanic.

Regarding warranties, here is a conversation I had earlier this year on the Mattress Underground with someone who worked for a warranty company. So, good luck with that.

One reason I had to buy my mother-in-law a DLX Premier Hybrid earlier this year is that her Beautyrest mattress failed dramatically in less than 15 months. She was experiencing intense pain in her hip and lower back area on top of her existing geriatric ailments. Upon inspecting her mattress, it seemed that the entire comfort layer and cover had sunk down to the springs. She had paid for an extended warranty through Raymour, but knowing the process and not wanting to deal with the time-consuming steps—emails, photos, phone calls, etc.—and never being certain of the outcome, I just decided to order a DLX for her. Less than a week later, it was delivered to her home, placed on her new Yawnder4 adjustable base, and she was finally sleeping comfortably again.

You don’t want to spend the rest of your life dealing with a mattress inspector who will keep moving the goalposts until you give up.

I am sure @DLX may chime in with their professional assessment too, and for the record, they tend to be modest, as they are not the type to over promise, but their products are extremely well made, durable and provide comfort and longevity. If you do decide to go with the firm, their comfort layer and cover will still offer a nice balanced cushion affect.

Hopefully this helps,

Maverick

@Maverick thanks for the mention and for sharing your insights—much appreciated! As always, we’d like to add that what’s underneath the mattress plays a crucial role in its overall feel and performance. If someone is experiencing dipping or discomfort, we often recommend placing the mattress on the floor to rule out support issues. It’s a simple way to isolate whether the foundation is contributing to the problem.

For those debating between the medium and firm versions of the DLX Classic, it’s true that personal preferences and sleep style are key. For individuals with similar builds to you and your husband, the medium could strike a good balance. However, for dedicated side sleepers, there might be concerns about whether it’s soft enough for shoulder comfort.

Adding a topper can be an excellent way to adjust the feel without compromising the mattress’s inherent support. While some see toppers as temporary solutions, they can actually offer a lasting and versatile enhancement. Scandinavian brands like Hästens have shown this approach to be effective—even with their high-end models priced in the $20,000+ range.

We agree that the DLX Classic’s thoughtful construction reduces the risk of issues like dipping or sinking over time. Our focus is always on balancing support and cushion to meet a variety of needs. And as you noted, warranties can sometimes feel like a maze, so choosing a well-made product up front is a smart move.

If anyone has specific questions or needs, feel free to reach out—we’re here to help!

Hi @Hfaust245

You may have already made your mattress decision but if not, I wanted to give my own experience with the DLX Classic. I bought the 12 inch medium, which doesn’t have quite as much comfort material as the 14 inch so that is important to keep in mind. I’m a male, about 5’8" and approximately 165 lbs. I consider myself a combination side and stomach sleeper, although possibly more a stomach sleeper throughout the night. That may be because I have frequently purchased firm mattresses, which prompted me on my stomach sooner when sleeping because of the lack of pressure relief on my shoulder and hip on my side. I spoke with DLX customer service a few times before the purchase (they were/are very available and responsive). Based on our conversations and a Goodbed review, I decided to purchase the medium. They advised that had I bought the 14", the firm rather than the medium model might have been preferred.

I found that while sleeping on my side, there was not as much pressure relief as I would have preferred so I slept more on my stomach in the night. I have since used a 2" soft topper from Sleep on Latex, which works fairly well but feels a tad too soft on my stomach. I have also tried using an inexpensive egg crate topper from Target, which provides a small bit of pressure relief on my side, while maintaining enough firmness for my stomach. While neither of these options has proved perfect, overall I’m sleeping fairly well most nights. I’m open to suggestions to make the experience even better and I know DLX would provide feedback should I reach out to them.

In hindsight, I would have probably purchased the 14" for the extra comfort and both DLX and Goodbed were pretty spot on about their description of the 12" mattress and the possible lack of pressure relief for side sleepers. I think it is a decent mattress, especially for the price point, and would be really great for a stomach sleeper-firm enough but comfortable enough as to not feel like a brick. I also like being able to flip the entire mattress to avoid wear and sinkage.

Thank you for the information! I purchased a DLX Classic in medium after reading the advice given! I’m so excited to try it, the mattress arrived today!

So far the experience has been great. The mattress arrived in a big box. It was heavy but my husband and I got it upstairs and opened it in our room. The mattress inflated immediately and looks great. It feels supportive yet soft enough for my shoulders so far! I will update once I sleep on it.

@DLX makes a great mattress. I would challenge most people to discern the difference between a DLX classic flippable to any other conventional mattress.

Best of luck with it and use it in good health!

Maverick

Ok- so after sleeping on the mattress I realized that it is too firm for my shoulders. I am so disappointed - my hip pain isn’t there this morning but I was tossing and turning because my arms were going to sleep and I woke up with my upper back, shoulders and neck sore. I even put on a 2 inch memory foam topper last night that we had and it didn’t help much. I don’t really like the feeling of memory foam either because I find it hard to roll at night and I get hot.
I know you are supposed to try for 30 days but I don’t know if I can last with a sore back for 30 days! Please help! I feel like I’ll never be comfortable. Is there a way to have support for my lower back and soft enough for my shoulders? Did I get the wrong mattress? Maybe I should have gone with the latex Lux by Dlx? I liked the flippable design of the classic but this is so hard. Help please!

If you feel your shoulders are digging into the mattress when sleeping on your side, check your pillow. Most times, a higher loft pillow will raise your head and neck, put your body in alignment and your shoulders wont be digging into the mattress in a way that will hurt your shoulders.

I mentioned in another post, when I create my pillows, I typically make horsehair, latex noodles, wool batting or some combination of each. If I am more than 1.5" off on the height, my neck, shoulders and lower back remind me I was “off” the next morning.

Folks tend to overlook their pillow loft as part of their sleep comfort. They tend to think it is just “talk.” An incorrect pillow loft can make or break a good nights sleep.

Additionally, if this is after one night of sleep, your assessment is way to premature. I would not place any memory foam on this mattress at this point. I dont want to sound mean or insensitive, but that is why you have trials for extended periods of time.

It is the equivalent of a former athlete walking into a batting cage 20 years after having stopped playing and swinging a bat. It takes one swing to realize, how out of shape you really have become. And you feel it for days, believe me, I know.

The opposite situation could have occurred. You slept on the bed the first night and it was soft, cushiony and great, and then 30 days later it soften to the point of hammocking your pack, where there is no fix for the too soft mattress.

It is great that you can report your progress, but you need to take a step back and allow your body to adjust.

Sorry to have to put it in this context, but you need to address your pillow and allow your body to adjust.

At the end of the day there are several realities. It is possible the mattress may not be the best option for you, unlikely, but a real possibility. You may adjust after a few weeks. One thing for certain @DLX will never leave you hanging with a new mattress purchase. They are one of the best customer service mattress companies out there and they always make it right when all parties are being reasonable about their preferences and expectations. I say this as there are some that are looking for the 100% perfect mattress down to every single stitch, and sometimes it just does not exist.

Thanks Maverick!
Ok! I like the honesty! I need to be patient. I just ordered this pillow on Amazon - do you think this will help? Or do you have one that you recommend ? I don’t think I will be making my own out of horse hair and noodles haha! I appreciate your dedication to good sleep and expertise!

Hey Heather,

Ok so this is my pillow collection. Pick one LOL.

A while back, I got two of those cervical pillows. I really liked them, but my wife didn’t. They work wonders for back sleepers, but are just okay for side sleepers. They’re generally firmer (when lying on them, not squeezing them) and provide excellent support, keeping your head and neck stable. People who like cuddling aren’t as fond of them, but after a night on one, you’ll feel really “together.” For me, it was a short-term fix. Sometimes, I prefer a firmer pillow, like my horsehair or wool one, and other times I like a bit of sink, but without the bounce-back, which drives me nuts. With some pillows, especially solid latex ones, my head bobs around like a buoy in the ocean. Oddly enough, my wife loves the solid latex talalay pillows.

Just as with a mattress, there can be more than one that will satisfy sleep comfort. I have had a cold for the past few days, so i switched to my latex noodle pillow. My head sinks in, much like a viscoelastic memory foam (Tempurpedic) pillow, which I do like, but without the bounce. It is very interesting how the noodle latex (like the cozypure baa-noodle or noodle) pillow, allows your head to sink in, but as the noodles displace, you dont get the bounce like a solid latex pillow. But they are very cozy and seems to apply the right counter pressure as your head sinks in.

When I am not feeling under the weather, I prefer the firmer horsehair or wool pillow. All of these pillows are very cool to sleep on and at the right loft, keeps my body aligned in a way I am comfortable. I tend to like a angled alignment rather than a parallel to the mattress alignment. Like in the first picture, rather than the top picture of the trio.

The point is you may find that you want a couple of pillows that work well for you, as there may be times that one pillow will feel better than the other, particularly if you have a cold, headache or some other issue that may be bothering you.

I am very fond of tempurpedic pillows too. While I do not like their mattresses, I think tempflow is a better choice there, their pillows, particularly their CloudPro line, which has just been replaced with the Tempur Cloud Hybrid, but if you can find the CloudPro on Amazon, they come in 3 sizes, Hi, Mid and Lo, depending on your size and sleep position.

The noodle pillows @CozyPure sells, you dont have to go all out for the Baa-Noodle (wool and noodles) their basic noodle is great, and for $10 they will send extra noodles in case their loft is not high enough.

The main take away here is there is always an alternate solution to a problem, not one size fits all, and some trial and error may be necessary, particularly with a new mattress. I tend to experiment with different things just to see how it feels. I am currently waiting delivery of my 3rd or 4th topper( a Perfectly Snug) in 2 years. Not because we are uncomfortable, but I like to see how the hype lives up to reality. My wife likes to use a heated sleeping pad, so hopefully the Perfectly Snug with keep her feet and upper body warm. And this is with a 3" organic wool topper and a wool duvet and a down duvet on top. No, they don’t make us hot. You might think so, but wool is very temperature regulating and is down, so you really are not hot under there, which is why she likes the heating pad.

I know I got a little off track, but hopefully it provides a better understanding that there is not just one fix for any particular situation. The cervical pillow you purchase can be used on either side. I happened to use the higher side, but depending on the distance between the mattress and your nose, when on your side. Most folks will tell you to measure to your ear, but then you have to add some for a little sinkage in the pillow.

Hope this helps.

Maverick

@Hfaust245, thank you for sharing your feedback about your mattress. I’m truly sorry to hear that it feels too firm for your comfort. We understand how frustrating it can be when a mattress doesn’t meet your expectations. We design our mattresses to provide a range of support and comfort levels, but we also know that individual preferences and needs can vary greatly.

As we mentioned pre-sale, a topper can be a great option if the Classic mattress feels too firm. With the Classic, you get a solid, well-built mattress that you can adjust after sleeping on it by adding a topper to further customize the comfort.

Keep in mind that for a mattress that is too firm or hard, a memory foam topper isn’t ideal for adding extra cushioning. Most memory foam compresses to essentially zero, leaving you back on the hard surface. This is why transition layers are so important in memory foam mattress designs.

While not identical to the LatexLux, you can achieve similar cushioning by adding a 3" latex topper to the Classic mattress. As mentioned, toppers can be seen as a temporary solution, but they can actually enhance both comfort and durability. Scandinavian brands like Hästens and Duxiana all use them as part of their mattress design and cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000 for a mattress with a topper.

Here are some helpful tips about giving the mattress time to adjust: Yes, we recommend giving it 30–60 days for your body to adjust and for the mattress to break in. You don’t want to overcompensate too quickly. At a minimum, give it 30 days. However, if within the first couple of weeks the mattress causes you to wake up in the middle of the night due to pain that persists throughout the day, we need to address it sooner. For instance, if the pain is so severe that it disrupts your sleep and prevents you from falling back asleep, making a change sooner than 30 days is necessary. On the other hand, if you experience minor discomfort or aches in the morning that resolve quickly, giving the mattress 30–60 days is a good idea.

Only you can determine how much discomfort you’re willing to endure. Based on our experience, approximately 75% of people who initially report the mattress feeling uncomfortable find it comfortable after 60 days. However, about 25% may still need to adjust the mattress using a topper, replacing a layer, or making other modifications.

As @Maverick mentioned, a pillow is just as important as the mattress in terms of comfort, especially for side sleepers with shoulder pain. With the right amount of softness and cushioning in the mattress, a pillow can make a significant difference in the overall comfort. For side sleeping, you want a pillow that keeps your head in a neutral position, so it needs to be thick enough and firm enough. A pillow that is too thin or too soft can tilt your head toward the mattress, driving your shoulder into the mattress and putting more pressure on your shoulder.

Hi all! So it’s been a week…I was unable to tolerate the firmness of the mattress for the entire week as I was waking up with sore neck, headache, sore shoulders and hip. I ended up back on our old mattress which was still on our bedroom floor. It seemed better to wake up with just sore hips as opposed to the whole body being sore and a headache. My husband stayed on the firm mattress and he liked it!
I got a 2 inch “sleeponlatex” soft topper- they are Dunlap latex and seemed to be a good company-
I had my first night with the topper on top of the Dlx Classic medium and it felt perfect to me! I had no pain this morning! I also purchased a medium latex pillow that has a good height for my neck. It’s the medium talatex pillow I got it I. Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0D7C6D6FP?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&th=1

So this morning I was all excited and asked my husband how he slept and he said terrible and that the latex topper made it too soft for him!!!
Now I’m so upset! He said it’s ok and he will adjust and he can’t judge based on one night but he was doing so well on the medium mattress, he has a very demanding job and I want him to be able to sleep well.

What should I do??!? Now I’m thinking I should have gone with the DLX hybrid or latex lux with the split firmness levels…
I can still return the mattress and topper and exchange for one of those.
I really don’t want my husband to be miserable.

The absolute best thing to do is speak with @DLX. They are the easiest and best customer service company to work with. Take a deep breath and relax, they will get this message and reach out to you.

There is always a solution.

Mavick

It’s exciting to hear that, as we discussed, the topper is a good option for you. However, I understand your concerns about your husband’s comfort. It does sound like you and your husband have different comfort needs.

One option could be to split the layer in half—you could use the topper on your side, and he could go without on his side. That said, it might not be an ideal solution since it could result in different heights, especially on a queen-size mattress.

Another possibility would be to consider getting a 2-inch split layer, with half in soft for your side and half in firm for his side.

Before jumping to anything drastic, since it has only been one night, I’d suggest giving it a week to adjust, if possible. After a week, if it’s still not comfortable, we can explore starting the refund process.

It’s natural to feel buyer’s remorse and wonder if the DLX Hybrid or LatexLux with split firmness levels would have been a better choice. It’s hard to say if you’d still be struggling with comfort. For now, let’s focus on what you have—the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

If you can, give it a week and let’s talk after that.

Hi everyone! I’m back again with an update. So we have been sleeping on the mattress with the 3 inch latex topper. I am not in pain anymore and it feels comfortable to sleep on but the motion transfer is abysmal. It is akin to sleeping on a waterbed. Any time my husband moves my entire body moves and I wake up.

I’m thinking I may want to exchange this mattress for the premier hybrid split firmness or the latexlux split firmness medium/ firm.

If I find the classic medium with a 3 inch Dunlop medium topper comfortable which firmness level would you recommend for my side? I’m leaning towards medium for me and firm for my husband as he still finds this bed with the topper a bit soft.
Also which mattress? Premiere hybrid or latex lux? I can’t tolerate the bouncing when I’m sleeping it wakes me up constantly so would need better motion isolation. I also sleep hot so I’m not a huge fan of memory foam because it’s so hot.

@Hfaust245 Sorry to hear that the mattress and latex topper are creating too much motion. Latex, being a rubber material, naturally has some bounce.

Keep in mind that sometimes the bed frame and the support under the mattress can affect motion transfer. Since the overall feel is comfortable, would you be able to share what is supporting the mattress? If possible, we recommend trying the mattress on the floor with the topper for a night or two to rule out whether the bed frame is contributing to the motion.

If placing it on the floor isn’t feasible, feel free to send us pictures of what is between the mattress and the floor—the more, the better. Ideally, photos should show directly under the mattress and beneath the bed frame. You may also send a link to the bed frame for reference.

It’s a metal adjustable base that we got from mattress firm when we purchased our Beautyrest. It’s stable.
