Thanks for your questions! I’d be happy to clarify the details about the DLX Classic and help you decide if the softer version might be a good fit for you.
Softness is highly subjective and can vary depending on personal preferences, body type, and sleep position. For most people, the DLX Classic 12" in Soft is slightly firmer than expected for a mattress classified as soft. This is due to the 2.25" of padding on each side over an 8" pocket coil, which provides firmer and more supportive characteristics. If you can share your height, weight, sleep position, and details about your current mattress (brand, model, firmness, likes/dislikes), I can give you a better sense of whether this would work for you.
Currently, the DLX Classic is available in a 12" height online. The switch from a 14" design was made due to shipping constraints, as the 14" version exceeded the weight and dimensional limits for FedEx shipping. While the 14" model had an extra layer of foam on each side, giving it a slightly softer feel, the 12" version still offers excellent comfort and support. We still make the 14" version for local customers who are able pickup at the factory or local delivery in Western NY.
To clarify, we still offer hybrids like the Premier and LatexLux in both 12" and 14" options. The only difference between these models is the height of the coil: the 12" version uses a 6" pocket coil, while the 14" version uses an 8" pocket coil. We are still able to offer the 14" Premier because it ships in two boxes. This is possible due to the Premier’s zipper design, which allows you to insert the 3" layer into the mattress. The Classic does not have this feature, making it unable to ship in two-boxes.
Regarding the difference between coil heights, our testing and years of experience with 6" and 8" pocket coils show that neither has an advantage in terms of durability. The 6" coil, being shorter, has slightly less sway, which provides marginally better motion isolation. While the overall feel is very similar, some individuals find the 6" coil to be just a touch more supportive.
Choosing between the 12" and 14" models often comes down to personal preference regarding mattress height or specific bed requirements. The difference in feel is minimal. The 12" model may feel marginally firmer, but in our testing and experience, most people cannot discern a noticeable difference between the two. Additionally, the shorter coil in the 12" model contributes to slightly less motion transfer.
There are some advantages to selecting the 12" model. Sheets are often easier to find, as many are designed for mattresses of this height. Additionally, bed frames typically accommodate 12" mattresses better, avoiding obscuring the headboard. The 12" model also tends to work more seamlessly with adjustable beds, as shorter mattresses bend more easily—though the 14" model is still compatible with adjustable bases.
For combo sleepers like yourself, the soft version of the DLX Classic could be a solid option, but it really depends on your preferences and sleeping needs. If you’re local and interested in the 14" model, that could also be worth exploring. Let me know if you’d like more information or if you can provide more details about your current setup—I’d be happy to assist further!
