I’m trying to learn more about the 14" DLX Premier vs the 14"Latex hybrids. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
For context- My husband and I are both lower end plus size. I prefer a softer mattress and he prefers a firmer mattress. We do not kike the feel of memory foam.
Happy to help figure out whether the Premier Hybrid or LatexLux will be comfortable for you. Neither mattress uses memory foam, so we’re all set there. And with both models, we can split the firmness in the top layer so each side can be adjusted independently.

Since you mentioned being plus size, keep in mind that everything between the mattress and the floor will impact the feel and durability. If you don’t mind, let us know if you’ll be using an existing setup or buying something new.

250/6"0/stomach and back sleeper…prefers firm to extra firm.
We went out to some big box stores. I enjoyed the feel of some Heirloom models. But we both felt we could sleep on/agree on a Stearns & Foster Luxe Estate Medium with pillow topper. He also a Beauty Rest Black in firm with a pillow topper. That was still a little too firm for me but it wasn’t a total no.

Great to hear that you were able to speak with us. While we do have the split option which sounds like it might be necessary since we only adjust the 3" comfort layer, it can be difficult to find the perfect feel for both partners when one person is a back sleeper who prefers firm to extra firm and the other is a side sleeper who likes soft. Normally, we would recommend the LatexLux 12" for someone of similar height and weight who prefers firm to extra firm and the Premier 14" for a side sleeper who like soft.
Based on the information you shared in the email scheduling the call (if you are the same couple), you mentioned that you prefer the feeling of sleeping on the mattress rather than in it. That’s why we recommended the 12" LatexLux for you as a side sleeper despite your preference for soft.
With the additional information that the Stearns & Foster Luxe Estate Medium was comfortable, we would probably reconsider our initial recommendation.
Do you happen to know the brand and model name of your current mattress? And if you’ve owned any others in the past 5–7 years, please let us know as well.
Keep in mind that everything between the mattress and the floor will impact the feel and performance of the mattress. If a mattress in a store was placed on an adjustable base that uses plywood for support, and then you place it on a slatted platform at home, it will likely feel less supportive at home.
If you’ve had issues with sagging, it’s important to keep in mind that even with a well-built mattress everything between the mattress and the floor will affect firmness and durability. Unfortunately, a lot of foundations and bases out there aren’t adequate. If you’ve had mattresses sag or compress quickly in the past, we strongly recommend reviewing your support system before buying a new mattress.
As a bigger guy at 260 pounds, any mattress I owned would sag within a year or two until I built a platform that was so sturdy I could walk on it without the wood creaking. I’m happy to give some suggestions or review what you’ll be putting the mattress on.

We are currently on a Zinus memory foam. It’s been too firm for me from the start and has only gotten more uncomfortable as the years have dragged on. Before that it was another memory foam mattress but I think it was a Sealy or Serta. I don’t remember…it’s been a while. That was comfortable for me at the start but towards the end it became like sleeping on a marshmallow and neither one of us could sleep. When we went shopping we both felt that an innerspring or hybrid was the most comfortable. We tried a latex (Prana I believe) but I don’t remember if that was all latex or a hybrid. They had both.
My husband sleeps more on his stomach than back but does sleep on his back.

Based on the information so far, we’d probably recommend a custom split with half Premier and half LatexLux. We’d lean toward the Soft Premier for you and the Medium LatexLux for your husband. This is an off-the-menu option, but it’s something we offer, and the pricing ends up being the differenc between the LatexLux or Premier. We’d still lean toward the 12" height given your heights, weights, and the fact that you’re primarily stomach and back sleepers.
Just to confirm, would you mind sharing what will be supporting the mattress like the bed frame, box spring, foundation, platform bed, etc? This could impact whether we recommend the 12" or 14". Please send photos or links. Everything between the mattress and the floor will affect the feel and performance. No need for exterior photos just the support system. Are you using something existing or buying something new?

If we chose to do the custom split what would the premier feel like? Any comparison or general ideas would be appreciated. I’m struggling with not being able to test it out, given that our last bed in a box didn’t work for me. And if we went that route, would the top layers still be able to be swapped if say the medium was not firm enough for my husband.
Right now we have a Zinus bed frame, bought at the same time as the mattress. It’s not letting me share the link, but this is the model we got from Amazon. It’s held up ok so far but we know we need to purchase a new bed frame sooner rather than later. Financially, we won’t be able to buy a new bed frame at the same time as a new mattress.

From what I understand, it may be better for us to go with a 14" as it supports more weight. Besides us, we have an 80lb dog who sneaks into bed, and sometimes one of our young kids climbs in during the night as well. Would my understanding be accurate?

We can’t say it will be an exact match, but people who find Stearns & Foster in a 14"-ish height comfortable typically find the Premier comfortable as well.
Totally understand the budget concerns and times are tight and it’s important to stay within your budget. We do find the slats on most Zinus bed frames to be inadequate. Even if the spacing is within the recommended 3", the issue is usually the slat thickness and the type of wood, which is often a flexible composite that makes our mattress feel less supportive and not as firm as expected. Another issue is that the center legs on many of these frames aren’t very sturdy, tend to tip, and can cause sagging. There’s no problem with the outer frame from our standpoint, but the internal support is often the weak point.
One option is to add something on top of the existing slats to improve support. Some customers have had success with this option on Amazon. It is the most affordable and adequate option and based on feedback from customers, it appears to work well. We haven’t seen this one in person, but others have reported positive results with similar products. Just make sure the size is 76" x 80" for a king so it fully supports the mattress. It’s also worth checking the return policy just in case. Most negative reviews seem related to sizing, damage in transit, or sagging when used without slats which is why it’s important to place it on top of the slats you already have.
Please note that we’re not affiliated with this or any specific product and can’t personally vouch for it and we’re only passing along what has worked for others. There are other options out there, but this one is 10 mm thick, while many are only 6 mm, which tends to be too thin and flimsy.
A quick heads-up: a lot of bunkie boards on the market are made of double-walled corrugated cardboard, thin slats, or corrugated plastic. While they’re marketed as supportive, they don’t actually improve the situation much compared to your current setup. They might work short term but not long term. We recommend checking the construction details carefully before buying.
