Hi Cqrice,
If you’ve happened to read any of my posts, you’ll see my wife and I are in a similar range. I’m 6’0”, 220 lbs and she’s 5’4”, 135 lbs, so I can relate to what you’re describing. We’ve tested the 14" DLX Premier Hybrid, and it’s a fantastic mattress.
I actually bought this model (along with a Yawnder 4 adjustable base) for my mother-in-law. She had previously owned a $3K Beautyrest that developed a basketball-sized dip under her hip after just over a year. Since she was dealing with health issues, I didn’t want to waste time fighting a warranty claim. @DLX came to the rescue and built a split queen (firm/medium) that arrived in under a week.
At 5’3", 170 lbs, and a side sleeper, she actually preferred the firm side, and the mattress held up beautifully, still perfect two years later. For the rest of her life, she said it was the most comfortable sleep she’d ever had. Sadly, she passed on Friday, but that mattress gave her so much comfort.
The point is, this mattress does an exceptional job balancing support, pressure relief, and contouring. It really gives you that “sleeping on” rather than “sinking into” feel.
Given your stats, I’d suggest your husband go with a firm comfort layer, while you might prefer medium (or firm if you’ve leaned that way in the past). My wife and I both prefer a firmer feel, and I often fine-tune with a topper if it feels too firm at first.
Since we sleep on an even firmer mattress, I have tested a variety of toppers, mainly just for the experience. Our 9-9.5/10 firmness current mattress is being modified with a firm talalay 3" topper. For us, the feel is not much different than our core mattress itself. Toppers are great for targeting comfort or maintaining comfort, but either way will extend the life your mattress. So there are a lot of positives here.
Hope that helps, and welcome to the community!
