DLX Soft or Medium comfort layer for side/back sleepers

Hello!

We are considering the DLX Premier Hybrid 14” to replace our memory foam mattress. My husband is 6’2, 220 pounds, I am 5’6”, 155 pounds. We are both side/back sleepers. Currently, I am experiencing lower back pain due to sagging, my husband is experiencing shoulder pain. I am seeking info on which comfort layers would be best for us. I have read many, many reviews and feel that soft or medium would be best. However, does our difference in weight/height indicate which one would be better for each of us. Does my husband need more support? I am also curious about the latex comfort layer. Any input is much appreciated!

Thank you!!

Hi Cqrice,

If you’ve happened to read any of my posts, you’ll see my wife and I are in a similar range. I’m 6’0”, 220 lbs and she’s 5’4”, 135 lbs, so I can relate to what you’re describing. We’ve tested the 14" DLX Premier Hybrid, and it’s a fantastic mattress.

I actually bought this model (along with a Yawnder 4 adjustable base) for my mother-in-law. She had previously owned a $3K Beautyrest that developed a basketball-sized dip under her hip after just over a year. Since she was dealing with health issues, I didn’t want to waste time fighting a warranty claim. @DLX came to the rescue and built a split queen (firm/medium) that arrived in under a week.

At 5’3", 170 lbs, and a side sleeper, she actually preferred the firm side, and the mattress held up beautifully, still perfect two years later. For the rest of her life, she said it was the most comfortable sleep she’d ever had. Sadly, she passed on Friday, but that mattress gave her so much comfort.

The point is, this mattress does an exceptional job balancing support, pressure relief, and contouring. It really gives you that “sleeping on” rather than “sinking into” feel.

Given your stats, I’d suggest your husband go with a firm comfort layer, while you might prefer medium (or firm if you’ve leaned that way in the past). My wife and I both prefer a firmer feel, and I often fine-tune with a topper if it feels too firm at first.

Since we sleep on an even firmer mattress, I have tested a variety of toppers, mainly just for the experience. Our 9-9.5/10 firmness current mattress is being modified with a firm talalay 3" topper. For us, the feel is not much different than our core mattress itself. Toppers are great for targeting comfort or maintaining comfort, but either way will extend the life your mattress. So there are a lot of positives here.

Hope that helps, and welcome to the community!

Thank you, I appreciate that. She was sometimes my auxiliary tester, ie, dreamfit sheets, DLX Premier Hybrid, Yawnder 4 adjustable base, pillows, and all kinds of components and accessories, comforters, etc. She will be missed, but lived a good life of 87 years.

Thanks, John, I appreciate that.

Hi Maverick!

First, I am very sorry to hear about your mother. I lost mine is 2019 and there is a hole in my heart that cannot ever be filled.

I have read many of your posts here. They lead me to look closer at DLX. I’ve been doing my due diligence: contacted the company for support and seeking out a mattress that they suggest is the closest to theirs so we could lie on it. We both loved that mattress more than any other on display.

So I am pulling the trigger this morning and ordering our new mattress. We’re opting to buy two different comfort layers so we can test them out.

Thank you for all the information! It was truly helpful with this daunting task. Buying a mattress online, without testing it first, is scary. I feel much more comfortable after your rave reviews.

Take care of yourself.
Love and courage,
CQ
