Hi all,
I have a chronic illness that forces me to spend about 20 hours a day in bed. Since getting sick I’ve gone through four mattresses of various types, and every one started to weaken or sag to the point of being unusable within months of purchase. Some of these were high-end mattresses with reputations for durability, but near-24/7 use was apparently too much for them. (I’ve listed the specific mattresses I tried at the end of this post).
I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what to look for to find a mattress that won’t have this problem.
Also, two more specific questions I’m wondering about:
-
One solution I’m considering is just getting a very basic old-school spring mattress (Bonelle coil?) and adding toppers as needed. Thoughts on this?

It seems like hospital mattresses would need to be able to withstand this sort of continuous use. Is that correct, and if so does anyone know what it is about hospital beds that makes them so durable?
Further details: I am a 5’ 10” 180-lb. male and I alternate between laying on my back, side, or stomach, or reclining propped up against the headboard. I have enough mobility that things like bed sores and adjustable frame are not relevant considerations.
The mattresses I’ve tried that wore out were: 2 different full size Avocado greens (hybrids with Dunlop latex foam), a mid-range full size futon (I don’t remember the brand), and a cheap innerspring (twin-size zinus slumber 1). I also had a birch latex topper that wore out in a similar fashion.
I switched bed frames between the first and second avocado mattresses (I now use an avocado bed frame), so I’m pretty confident the issue is with the mattresses themselves, not the frame.
Thank you in advance for any insight you all might be able to provide!
