EDS/Lower Back issues, build-your-own Latex

Hey everyone,

My partner has EDS and I’ve got a pretty gnarly lower back. We generally look for a medium-firm mattress, and actually enjoyed laying on the purple restore-premier mattress. Obviously, we will do a dunlop base, but we are a bit unsure on how to stack other layers to emulate that, so we are looking for a bit of guidance here. I looked and didn’t easily find any videos on a layer tear-down for the purple mattresses, so something like that could solve our issue easily.

Either way, we really appreciate the insight. It’s our first time doing a DIY mattress and admittedly my partner is a bit hesitant (understandably!). I’m willing to do more leg work here, but wanted to get insight from the experts :).

With that said: I primarily sleep stomach/angled side, and she’s more of a side/back sleeper. So any insights here will be amazing.

Thank you!

Hey drpupper.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

As someone with hEDS myself…I get the hesitance BUT I do believe DYI is absolutely the way to go.

The purple restore-premier mattress uses 3" of a gel grid in their comfort layer; to be frank…buckling column gel isn’t a feel you can duplicate with a slab of latex. If you like buckling column gel…you would probably just want to buy exactly that. And, while I tend to steer people towards other options because it’s not a durable fit for most - it is a great fit for people with exceptional support needs…like people with EDS.

I’ll also let the experts chime in, but that’s my two cents.

i think part of our “desire” is to have some modularity so we can improve as we go, since we can’t really lay on a bed in a store with our (very large) dogs and cat to ensure it’s comfortable. So, even if it isn’t an exact fit, modularity sounds like a huge plus for us…tentatively :).

I have looked for the gel grid toppers on their own and this is the only website i have found one. Ive read shipping takes a while and a queen weighs 70 pounds. I have seen that this kind of material can break down in a few years, though the cooling and support it provides is good.

From looking at the build of the restore premier, how would suggest to construct it would be this:

The foams can be purchased from foambymail.com

Construction from top to bottom:

13" Cotton stretch cover from pocketspringstore.com

1" super soft foam (to mask some of the texture of the grid)
If you like how the squares of the grid feel, omit this and get a 12" cover. Which that super soft foam is very cheap so maybe it would be fine to try it anyway.

2" DOZE gel grid topper
1" hd36 foam
8" 15.5g springs from pocketspringstore.com
1" luxhd foam

Total cost would be about $1000
