(First time buyer) New mattress for Thuma bed (lower back pain)

Hi y’all, first time poster here.

I am looking to purchase my first mattress that I didn’t just look at the cheapest price and click “buy.” I am 6’0” 190lb and my wife is 5’3” 110lbs. We both suffer from lower back pain (mine from herniated discs, hers from just being sedentary all day). Both side/back sleepers. We purchased a Costco memory foam mattress at medium firmness in 2018 and it’s just not cutting it for us. We’re ready to make a significant investment into the mattress (as long as the mattress improves our sleep, we’re ready to make the leap). From my research thus far, this forum seems to have all the expertise we need to help us look for our next mattress.

What we’re looking for:

  1. Medium-firm/firm (we both prefer former beds)
  2. Cooling (I tend to get pretty hot at night)
  3. No preference on latex/memory foam etc.
  4. We are pretty set on purchasing either a thuma queen or king frame, so anything that works with that frame is good for us.
  5. No idea on anything dealing with separate layers since all I’ve slept on were cheaper beds

Thank you all in advance for all suggestions! And if I’m severely misinformed about anything, please let me know!

Hi Bluemoons and new MUGster, welcome to the MattressUnderGround.

Choosing a new mattress and navigating through the purchasing process can evoke both excitement and stress. Ideally, you have explored the Mattress Underground Tutorials TMU Tutorials to enhance your comprehension of the search and buying procedures. This includes gaining insights into the diverse materials, foams, and layer construction crucial for establishing an optimal sleep environment for both you and your spouse.

Thank you for sharing valuable insights that can aid in the selection process. It’s worth noting that considering size and weight differences may lead you to explore mattresses with a split comfort level. In case you’re unfamiliar with this concept, a split internal comfort layer involves a mattress that outwardly looks like a standard one. However, beneath the “cover,” there’s a layer or layers divided down the middle, from head to foot. Many of these mattresses offer the flexibility for sleepers to switch a comfort layer side for a different firmness or material, either immediately or in the future to accommodate changing comfort preferences. Alternatively, you might consider two twin XL mattresses on the same or separate bases, which can be either solid or mechanical.

I can certainly relate your favoring a firm bed. My wife and I enjoy our firm mattress.

In addressing concerns about sleeping hot, it’s prudent to approach claims of cooling materials, gels, and knits with a degree of skepticism. While it’s true that certain materials retain less heat than others, it’s essential to consider the nuances. For instance, Latex Foam tends to be cooler than Memory Foam and generally outperforms it in terms of temperature regulation. While you’ve mentioned not having a specific preference between Latex and Memory Foam, it might be worthwhile to delve into a comparison of the two.

Conducting some research on Memory Foam vs. Latex can provide a more comprehensive understanding of their individual qualities. Although they may share similarities in terms of pressure relief and comfort, distinctions exist in their feel, durability, and heat retention. This knowledge can contribute to a more informed decision in selecting a mattress that aligns with your preferences and priorities.

Memory Foam:

  1. Material Composition: Memory Foam, also known as viscoelastic foam, is made from polyurethane with added chemicals to enhance its viscosity and density.
  2. Feel and Response: Memory Foam contours to the body’s shape, providing excellent pressure relief and support. It has a slow response time, meaning it takes a moment to return to its original shape after pressure is applied and removed.
  3. Heat Retention: One potential drawback is that Memory Foam can retain heat, leading to a warmer sleeping experience. However, advancements in technology have led to the development of gel-infused or open-cell Memory Foam, which aims to address this issue.
  4. Durability: Memory Foam mattresses are known for their durability, although the lifespan can vary depending on the quality of the foam used.

Latex Foam:

  1. Material Composition: Latex Foam is derived from the sap of rubber trees. It can be natural (from the sap) or synthetic (made from petrochemicals).
  2. Feel and Response: Latex Foam has a responsive and springy feel. It contours to the body but with a quicker response time compared to Memory Foam. It provides a supportive and buoyant sensation.
  3. Heat Retention: Latex Foam tends to sleep cooler than Memory Foam. It has a breathable structure that allows for better air circulation, contributing to a cooler sleeping environment.
  4. Durability: Latex Foam is highly durable and resilient. Natural latex generally has a longer lifespan compared to synthetic latex.

Considerations:

  • Price: Memory Foam mattresses often come in a wider range of price points, making them more budget-friendly. Latex mattresses can be pricier due to the cost of production.
  • Allergies: Latex allergies may be a concern for some individuals. However, most people with latex allergies react to proteins found in natural latex, and synthetic latex or latex hybrids are alternatives.

Ultimately, the choice between Memory Foam and Latex Foam depends on personal preferences, such as feel, support, and temperature regulation, as well as budget considerations. Your wife and yourself should try out both types in person if possible or carefully consider user reviews and specifications when making a decision.

Members recognized as Trusted Members at TMU (The Mattress Underground) serve as an invaluable resource for gathering information about selecting the right mattress and understanding each individual’s PPPs (Personal Preferences, Posture and Alignment, and Pressure Relief). When testing a mattress, it is crucial for both partners to observe each other while lying in their primary sleeping positions after the body has settled, typically around 15 minutes or so.

Don’t hesitate to take pictures to assess posture and alignment on the mattress, as this step is often considered a pivotal initial phase in the mattress selection process. This visual observation can provide valuable insights into how well the mattress supports each individual’s unique sleeping needs and preferences. These observations can significantly contribute to finding a mattress that suits both of your needs and promotes a comfortable and supportive sleep experience.

You will find that there are mattresses comprised of all latex, from support to comfort layer, that offer both uniform and split comfort layers as well as more traditionally designed mattresses that do not incorporate either latex or viscoelastic memory foam, but still offer uniform or split comfort.

Finally, I would know, what I have coined as the 4R’s.

1. Refund: Ensure that you understand the manufacturer’s refund policy. Be clear about the conditions under which you can receive a refund if the mattress doesn’t meet your expectations. Pay attention to the timeframe and any specific requirements for initiating a refund.

2. Return: Understand the return policy, including any associated costs and procedures. Some companies may offer a trial period during which you can return the mattress if it doesn’t suit your needs. Clarify whether there are any shipping or restocking fees associated with returns.

3. Restocking Fees: Check for any restocking fees that may apply if you decide to return the mattress. Some companies charge a percentage of the purchase price as a restocking fee. Knowing this in advance helps you make an informed decision.

4. Reputation of the Manufacturer: Research and consider the reputation of the mattress manufacturer. Look for reviews and feedback from customers who have purchased mattresses from the same company. A reliable and reputable manufacturer is more likely to provide quality products and excellent customer service.

Additional Tip: While reading reviews, be cautious about relying solely on review sites’ evaluations. Individual offsite reviews, especially from verified purchasers, can offer a more authentic and unbiased perspective. Look for reviews that share experiences related to your specific needs, preferences, and concerns. This approach allows you to gather a more nuanced understanding of the mattress’s performance and whether it aligns with your expectations.

I hope this information proves helpful. While I enjoy offering recommendations for specific mattress systems, it might be more beneficial for you and your wife to conduct some research and narrow down your options.

Purchasing based on documented specifications is a viable approach; in fact, my most recent purchase followed this method. After trying over a dozen mattresses with various foams and materials from different brands, my wife and I decided to make our purchase of a Bed-in-a-Box (BinB) online. We encountered challenges regarding quality, durability, and reviews of traditional legacy brands when exploring the traditional route, prompting us to opt for an online purchase based on detailed specifications. This method allowed us to bypass the roadblocks we faced with the more conventional options in the market today.

It turned out to be a wise choice for us as it has been more than a year and we are still loving our mattress as much today as when we purchased it initially.

After finalizing your mattress purchase, the journey is not yet complete. Selecting the right pillows is a crucial step to complement the posture and alignment aspect, putting the finishing touches on your quest for the ultimate comfortable night’s sleep. It’s essential not to underestimate the significance of pillows in your search for a new sleep system, although this consideration typically follows the mattress purchase. Ensuring the right pillow choice is pivotal for overall sleep quality and well-rounded support.

Good luck and all the best on your search. Perhaps a trusted member or two may offer their insights as well.

Hello Bluemoons and welcome!

In terms of being firm as well as cooling, a latex, hybrid, or innerspring mattress could all sleep cool depending on the materials. Usually natural materials are more breathable than synthetic materials. And honestly, the type of bedding you use can impact sleeping cool/hot as much or more than the mattress. Breathable, natural materials can be a big help in sleeping cooler, whether in the mattress or the bedding, or even your pillow.

In terms of layers, typically a mattress with layers provides some level of customizability, which could be useful to you and your wife in your different situations. Sometimes some of the layers can even be divided into zones if you need more support for hips and back, but don’t want your shoulder/arm area to have as much support/pressure.

The Thuma looks like it would provide adequate support, with a center support and the slats look like they would be no more than 3" apart, which would be important for a latex mattress.

Best of luck to you, and as you start to nail down more specifics and try options, we are happy to provide information. If you give one of our staff a call, they are also happy to work with you over the phone, as we deliver nationwide.
