Foundation Needed?

I’m looking to purchase a 9" FloBeds natural latex mattress and am wondering if I need an additional foundation. The bed frame I purchased has 14 slats, 2.5 inches apart and feels pretty solid, but the mattress would sit about 2" down in the frame. That height would work, but I’m wondering if, being recessed, the mattress would be difficult to rotate and put sheets on, as it would have to be lifted out of the frame. The bed has a headboard and footboard.

Thank you for all the great info found on this site!

Latex is heavy, no doubt about it. You don’t mention the size of your bed. I can only imagine that lifting the mattress in order to put sheets on is going to be difficult if it is recessed to that degree. We have a queen 10" polycore/memoryfoam combo guest mattress that sits 5" below the frame and 5" above the frame. I find it very cumbersome to change bedding on it and I’m sure it weighs less than a 9" all latex mattress would.

Hi NancyD,

It will depend on how much of a gap there is in between your mattress and the side rails but if it’s tight and it would be difficult to put your hand in between the mattress and the frame then I would agree with Magpie that it may be difficult to change the sheets and bedding if you need to lift up a heavy latex mattress.

I never thought of that detail…I was going on my experience where the mattress is very tight against the frame.

Thanks, Phoenix and magpie. I guess I won’t know how tight the mattress will be to the frame until I receive it. If it’s too tight, I will have to buy a slatted bunkie board to raise it up. I see FloBeds sells something like that, but I don’t see the cost anywhere on their site. I’d rather not buy a $400 foundation if I don’t have to!

Hi NancyD,

When I talked with Dave at Flobeds a while ago he told me that the slat conversion was $99 for all sizes except the twin which is $49 and the upholstered version is $199. There is also a small shipping charge which would depend on the area of the country you live.

Thanks so much for that info! I just placed my order after speaking with Dewey at FloBeds. He didn’t seem to think it would be a problem to lift the mattress corners for sheet changes, but I guess I’ll just have to see how it goes. At least I know it won’t be terribly expensive if I need to order the slat conversion. I only paid $600 for the bed itself at World Market!

Hi NancyD,

Congratulations on your new mattress … as you know I think you made a great choice

I’ll be interested in seeing how your “sheet tucking” works out and of course your other comments and feedback when you receive it.
