My wife and I got a Purple Restore Plus Hybrid Mattress in king size about 6 weeks ago. We cannot return the mattress under Purple’s normal 100 night trial because the mattress was a warranty replacement due to issues with our original Purple mattress from 7 years ago. We got partial credit toward the new mattress.
My wife had hip and back pain almost immediately from the new mattress and has tried sleeping on it several other times but the pain comes back in one night. She is currently sleeping on a 20 year old queen coil spring mattress in our guest room without pain. She has also not had issues with hotel mattresses when we have had some recent travel. We need some help in figuring out what to buy. My wife is 5’6" 195 lbs. She is primarily a side and back sleeper. She generally likes a firm mattress with support. The mattress in our guest bedroom she is currently using has a firm mattress with a quilted/feather mattress pad so it is comfortable and firm at the same time. She does not like sinking into the mattress. She cannot sleep on anything soft because it is bad for her back issues which she has had for many years. We always get stressed buying mattresses. It was hard many years ago when it was just going to department or mattress store but not it is even harder with all the types of mattresses now available in addition to in store versus online line. I am 6’ 275 lbs but I generally do not have trouble with mattresses. Please help. My wife and I would like her to sleep without pain in our bedroom.
If the Purple mattress is too soft for her, unfortunately there’s no good way to fix that. Normally neither a firm nor extra firm topper will help beyond a negligible degree, even if you purchased a 3” extra firm Dunlop topper. Support has to come from the mattress, not from the topper. Also, latex will conform to whatever surface it is on, so if your mattress is soft or sagging the topper will take on the characteristics of your mattress. Lastly, having a top layer that is not encased with the rest of the mattress will allow that top layer enough spatial freedom to move upwards when you lay on it, making for a very plush and enveloping feel, even if it’s an extra firm layer.
That would explain why Purples sales have declined steadily over the last 3 years and why they are operating at a loss according to recent financial reports. Are you looking to stay with a spring mattress or would you consider a full latex option? Here a links to our two most popular models- Ultimate Hybrid- Coil/Latex and our full latex option - #1 Selling Latex Mattress- Adjustable Ultra Plush, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products, Both models have the option of a dual firmness so if you need something different than her side it’s not a problem. Not sure you can fix the Purple but have you tried adding a firm topper over it?
Thanks for the response. One piece of information that I forgot to include is with issues getting mattresses in our house. We loved our original king traditional spring mattress. Unfortunately, when we moved into our house the movers had to bend it to get it upstairs. It messed up the integrity of the mattress because it cratered in the middle. That is why we opted for a roll up like the original Purple when we got a new mattress. The original Purple was fine but after 7 years it collapsed at edges. Purple has changed their whole line so there is not an original equivalent.
