We got out hybrid latex mattress a few days ago. It has a quad coil support, and then 3" medium talalay on top. Unfortunately motion isolation is somehow worse, even on our new platform solid wood foundation. Slept it it alone one night to see if I could sleep after a failed attempt the first night due to wiggles and me stressing about not being able to sleep on the brand new mattress. Once I finally fell asleep I slept great and woke up without any aches or pains. It did take me longer to get to sleep though, I think due to feeling my own heartbeat and not being used to the wiggles/tiny vibrations in the latex. The mattress feels super comfy and my husband has slept great. Last night we tried both of us in the bed again, and I didn’t get to deep sleep til almost 3am despite feeling very comfortable in any position.
Has anyone else had this same initial experience and then has it gotten better? If it doesn’t I guess I could replace my half of the latex with 3" memory foam, but that seems like a waste of paying for nice talalay latex, especially when it feels so comfortable.
Your experience describes anyone who doesn’t prefer latex’s experience well. It can feel soft and comfortable, but it is a layer of basically soft rubber, and so it can feel overactive.
Solutions to this is to either put soft topper on of either super soft foam, or soft latex on top of the medium latex. The softer the latex, the more you remove its strength to push you around. This is why with latex only beds or hybrid latex beds, i prefer a very plush latex on the top layer.
One thing you can try is to place that layer of memory foam underneath the latex. Latex, in order to be that bouncy, requires a solid or springy base. The memory foam acts as a dampener, and that combination would allow you to feel the comfort of the latex while removing the pushback of it.
It’s not uncommon to need a breakin/adjustment period for a mattress. Since it’s only been a few days, I’d give it ever-so-slightly more time (30-100 nights) before completely throwing in the towel and exchanging the layer, especially because you’re finding comfort and support on the bed once you’re asleep.
That said, not everyone loves latex and it may ultimately end up being the case for you! However, I wanted to make sure to point out that break-in period, and it’s super important!
I had this exact same experience when I first got my latex mattress. For the first 30 days I kind of hated it, now I think it is the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. For me, it really did get better.
I think there is just something so different about latex that until you’re used to it, it feels kind of weird. I was really stressed out about it as well since they’re so expensive which didn’t help. After time to get used to it plus a few stays at five-star hotels I am gleeful to get back in my bed, that’s how much I came to love it.
Thanks so much for sharing! I’m hoping the motion isolation gets better too, as I’ve been woken an hour early the last two mornings due to my husband getting up before me, and that was one of the issues we were looking to solve. I seem to be more used to the latex wiggles at least. Can’t tell if the medium latex is too soft and rounding my shoulders a bit when lying on my back, but scared to go firmer and have pressure points. Praying it gets better! I guess it might just not be a vast immediate improvement, but I’m hoping I’ll like it. If the motion isolation improves, I think we should be good.
There isn’t enough room in the cover for that so I would need to then take the latex out and put it on top of the mattress. We removed the hotter than hades waterproof cover which helped heat wise, but also the last two nights we were able to run our whole house fan which made the temperature glorious anyways. I’m curious about placing some carpet padding under the mattress so the coils aren’t basically directly on wood slats. I also looked today and I think out latex pieces were upside down. I know there isn’t really a top or bottom, but I flipped it to the side with more nice holes facing up. I’m hoping that as the cover wears in it will get better too, as there wasn’t much motion transfer when laying directly on the latex without the cover.
We put the mattress on the floor and I could still feel the motion. The coils seem to move a ton and it feels like they flex under everything. My husband thinks he is sinking in too much too, since on his side his hips sink in pretty far leaving his knees way too high. So then he starts tossing and turning and that wakes me up. So it appears that the mattress may be far too soft for him anyways, and a firmer top layer wouldn’t fix soft coils. The coils bottom out if he just plops down to sit. I can’t think of much else to try and change if the support is ultimately too soft.
Do you mean the texas pocket springs quadcoil? What is you guys build? Height and weight? And im assuming if its texas pocket springs you got the 15.5g version?
It’s the 14.75 I believe. And he’s 6’4" 215# side sleeper, and I’m 5’10" 135# mostly back sleeper but I lay on my side first. And 3" medium vita talalay. The coils came in the cover and covered with a thin layer of stretchy fabric, and the latex sits on top of that and is zipped in.
I find it hard to believe thats happening with the 14.75 at yalls weight. Im 215 and 5’11" and the 14.75 is really firm to me, i dont really sink into it at all. The 15.5g thats on my parents bed sinks about the perfect amount. 14.75g is the firm strong coil
I can ask the company again to be sure, since if it’s actually the 15.5 then maybe the engineered sleep duo latex might work for us. I’m thinking we need a split cal king for motion isolation at this point. And I think engineered sleep or sleepez would be my options for that from my research.
So according to something I saw on Reddit, I think the ones I have are technically 14.75, but with one less turn and fewer coils or something, leaving the overall feel closer to the 15.5 gauge all said and done. So that might explain it, as I was also very confused why with our heights and weights it feels so soft. And if there are fewer coils, the. Each coil would have a larger diameter which would explain why I’m feeling so much motion.
Oh yes that makes a lot of sense.
The way you’re describing it makes it seem even softer than the 15.5g.
14.75 is very firm, like 8.8 out of 10 without any foam on it. Thus the duo base is firm. Which i would say would be too firm for you, but my girlfriend weighs 110 and loves our bed with the 14.75g base, 3" quadmini in a topper cover, and 2" hybrid latex/memory foam.
I visited engineered sleep and tested all their beds. The duo lift is my favorite. 1" of wool, 3" quadmini, and another 2" wool on top, all sewn together with nice material is actually a great price for $620 after the discount you get from the mattress underground.
My second favorite model would be the memory plus model, except my preference is the latex on top of memory foam. They all felt good though, it’s just your preference.
I’m thinking my husband might prefer the lift since he sleeps hotter than me, and I might like the latex or memory. I slept decent for a looong time with a doubled up cal king memory foam topper on just my side of our way too firm mattress until that topper wore out and was rounding my shoulders too much and causing neck problems. I like that the latex is cooler though and I like the bounce, but maybe motion isolation is more important than temperature.
The quadmini conforms sort of similarly to latex, but what i like is that its neither bouncy like latex, nor smushy like memory foam. Its firmness is similar to a 3 inch layer of medium latex yet it doesnt try to bounce the sleeper around, it just conforms and feels very unique and comforting.
Well I called the company and it’s supposed to be 14.5gauge, but I explained my experience and they are going to swap out the coils for a new set and are thinking I got a bum coil pack since it shouldn’t feel as soft as we’re experiencing. I then thought about it, and if the support is being swapped out, maybe I just have them send the latex support instead of springs, as that should have better motion isolation, and I’m happy with the feel of the latex anyways. Just hoping all latex under one cover might be fine for us motion wise. My side of the cover already seems to have loosened up a bit, and it’s the same as the all latex cover, so that might work out just fine.
