Help finding a cool mattress for big & tall in 2025

6’1, ~325lb man in my mid 20s. Combination sleeper, typically falling asleep on my side and waking up on my back. Experiencing lower back pain in the mornings after switching to a purple classic in August. The main reason I’m creating a new thread is that the past threads from men of my size are several years old now and there are some new players. After reading the site guide on buying a mattress my best guess would be that a innerspring + latex would be my best bet, but unfortunately that seems to be out of my price range. I’m not necessarily in a position to be buying a new mattress at all right now, but I’m sick of waking up with pain. Around $1,500 should be my absolute max, and I’d feel more comfortable spending closer to half that.

The most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in was ironically the cheapest. It was the roughly 4" bed that came in my college dorm, with a 4" memory foam topper on it. I loved the feeling of sinking into the topper (though it slept warm), and the underlying coils kept me pain free even on sick days where I spent entire days in bed. My current purple is actually very comfortable to lie on, just not supportive enough I guess. It’s sitting on a metal platform off amazon if that matters.

What I’m looking for:

  • Plush feeling top with all night support
  • Sleeps cool (big man living in the deep south)

What I’m considering:

  • Big Fig - not a strong contender due to price and several inches of HD poly in the core. But it seems to come up a lot in forums in a positive light.
  • Denver Mattress co Doctor’s choice plush - also has more foam than I’d prefer, but the price is right. Availability is a big question. Might be worth a road trip.
  • Titan plus luxe - a lot of foam with a lot of buzzwords. Red flag central. But they get amazing reviews.
  • Engineered sleep duo latex - another one out of my price range. But very nice specs from a well respected name.
  • Boring hybrid - a relatively new brand. Again, foam but the price is right. I like this that this company seems to be all about transparency and customer value. They advertise very heavily on reddit, which makes me wonder if any of the reviews on there can be trusted.
  • Arizona Premium Mattress Ultimate Hybrid Coil Latex - if they ship to my neck of the woods, this seems like a solid option from one of the site’s trusted vendors.
  • Allswell luxe 12" - ultra budget pick from walmart. Specs aren’t super transparent, but at that price I’m considering just picking it up for now while I save up for a longer term option. My concern with this would be it being too firm.
  • DIY? It’s pretty intimidating, but I’m a handy fella who loves a good bargain and has free time. I would have to have enough resources to be super confident in my ability to pull it off before I dropped that kind of money on something I could potentially screw up.

I’m not married to any options, or the specific innerspring + latex composition. Even after working through the super helpful guide I find myself somewhat overwhelmed by all that’s out there. Hoping y’all can steer me in the right direction. The main reason I’m considering options outside my budget is that I’m scared I’d be losing out on a significantly better option over an unwillingness to spend an extra few bucks when I’m already spending so much. I’d love nothing more than to be told that I’ve fallen prey to big mattress’ marketing and I can sleep on clouds for under 1K with some smart shopping. Appreciate the help y’all!

BackScience 1 or BackScience Essentials? Those are quite firm.

I have BackScience2 which is a luxury firm and is good for back and side sleepers. I say go with BS2, but that is a bit out of your price range.

BS2 has been great for my back!!!

We ship all over the U.S. every day so unless you are out of the country or in Alaska or Hawaii we can ship to you. The only option we would have that would just fit your budget is our Ultimate Hybrid. Normally I would suggest going with the Firm choice for the latex but based on your info I think the Medium Dunlop might be the better choice.
