Help me choose a DIY mattress (heavy sleeper)

Hello, we are currently on a wink beds plus but that is not working anymore. We are a couple where 1 person is 5’6 400lbs and other is 5’6 150lbs. we sleep in different positions. We are looking for a new mattress and so far I have landed on few configurations. I need advice from you guys that were on similar boat or from experts here.
option 1:

  1. Combizone 8" from APM
  2. 3" 36ILD dunlop from APM
  3. 3" 28ILD Talalay from APM

Option 2:

  1. 14.75" quadcoil from TPS (with edge support)
  2. 3" 36ILD from APM
  3. 3" 28ILD from APM

Other options are also having 2 separate twinXL put together. we are concerned about the feel and also things shifting around.

Any other choices?

Hi cg75. Welcome to the forum! With that large disparity in weight and different sleeping position preferences for you and your partner, it may be challenging to find a single mattress that meets both of your needs. Have you tried any mattresses in a showroom to get a feel for what types of mattresses feel good to each of you?

I think your situation may lend itself very well to a split king setup with two twin XL mattresses. That way if the heavier partner needs something firmer with more robust support, while the lighter partner may prefer something with a more medium feel (for example), both can get what they need.

APM has some solid choices, as do other vendors on TMU. By working with them you should get the guidance and support you need to make a good decision.

Thanks for your advice. We are trying to avoid the 2 mattress situation (although we understand that where things might be trending). we are trying to exhaust all other options first

I get that, and I was a bit wary of the two mattresses as well. A compromise that may work for you is split layers within a single mattress cover. I think APM, SleepEZ, LMF and others can do that.

If you’re considering adjustable bases at all though, the separate mattresses are a game changer with each side being able to adjust head and foot elevations as desired. If you aren’t using adjustable bases, you can get a foam filler for the gap, throw a single king sheet over both mattresses, and you’ll barely even know the gap exists.

The drawbacks of the mattress gap that I was concerned about just aren’t as big as I’d made them out to be in my mind. I never sleep in the middle of the mattress any way, so that isn’t an issue. Middle of the bed cuddle time isn’t really a problem - sure you can notice the gap if you’re paying attention to that, but it’s trivial. For extracurricular activities, just move to one bed or the other instead of the middle. A twin xl is plenty of space for that - just ask any college student, lol.

The benefits of full customizability and each partner getting exactly the mattress that meets their needs outweigh the drawbacks, for me at least. Just wanted to add a little perspective from someone who initially shared your concerns before you totally write off the split king idea.

we are considering the side-by-side in a single mattress cover option. we already have adjustable bed but that’s not split

We always recommend using king-size comfort layers when your base consists of two Twin XLs (a split king). This helps eliminate any potential gap between the two units. As @cmyoung19 mentioned, it’s usually not a significant issue, but using a properly fitted cover will keep all components securely in place and prevent any shifting.

@PSS what will be the comfort layers look like in this situation? I am interested in having 14.75 in one side and 15.5 the other. I want to add to more 3l” layers of latex.

Thank you all. After talking to @PSS and online support from @Sleep_EZ I have pulled the trigger on the following. This is a split king setup in a single cover.
TPS : 8" quad coil , (1 side is 15.5 and other side is 13.5)
TPS : 15" king stretch cover
SleepEZ: 2x Medium 100% dunlop, 2x Firm 100% dunlop.

Will let you all know how it turns out.

we put this bed together yesterday. Needless to say, last night it felt extremely firm on both sides of the bed and felt like sleeping on a table. we are going to give some adjustment period, but definitely disappointing as of now. There was also a lot of motion transfer. we both could feel every movement by the other person (and both were tossing and turning a lot).
Any advice from you guys? @Sleep_EZ @PSS .. or anyone else that had a DIY mattress?
The gap between the 2 twinXL sides is also a bit annoying.

It’s always difficult to comment on “feel,” since comfort is highly subjective and varies from person to person. Are both sleepers experiencing the build as too firm? For reference, at 5’9" and 155 lbs, I personally find that firm latex placed on top of 15.5G coils will create a noticeably firm overall feel.

Regarding the gap you mentioned, there should not be any space between the two coil units. We sell Twin XLs and split kings all the time to be combined into a king, and we haven’t found this to be an issue. The QuadCoil design provides a flat, stable side that allows the units to sit tightly against one another.

As for the latex layers, are they king-size pieces or Twin XL? If they’re Twin XL and both sleepers prefer the same ILD, I always recommend using a single king-size comfort layer to ensure a seamless feel.

Thanks @PSS the coil seems to be ok. its the latex layers that have the gap at the top. the reason we went this way is if we need to swap out comfort layers for each individual. currently they are both same ILD.
I am sure it just needs time to adjust to the new mattress.
