Help me choose - drowning in a sea of options

Hey all, thanks for reading my post, I am looking for recommendations on a new mattress. This will be the fifth (!) mattress bought since 2019 and frankly I’m tired of getting lost in all the options.

Quick stats:

  • my spouse is 120 lbs, 5’4". Stomach sleeper, early riser. Generally cold at night.

  • I am 210 lbs, 5’11". Primarily side sleeper, occasionally back or stomach. Always hot af at night.

  • our doggo sometimes hops onto our bed at night. He’s 60 lbs.

  • we have a king frame with wooden slats as a base.

Whilst we both generally prefer firmer mattresses, we recently slept on a softer hotel bed and both had an excellent sleep.

Mattresses we’ve owned have all generally sagged within a relatively short period of time, despite regularly rotating them. We’ve had a serta pocket coil, 2 foam mattresses, and another which I don’t remember the brand.

Budget is flexible. We’ve tried cheap, expensive, and in between. Feeling like the princess and the pea at this point :joy:

Thanks for your help!

Hey there DrSuss,
Welcome to the MattressUnderGround, we are happy to have you here.

It sounds like you’ve been through quite the mattress journey! Five mattresses in 5 years is not an encouraging track record.

Given your preferences and experiences, it might be worth considering a hybrid mattress that combines the support of pocket coils with the comfort of foam or other materials. Here are a few suggestions based on your needs:

Since your wife is cold at night and you are hot, the introduction of wool into the mattress may offer a critical component for keeping you both comfortable given your dissimilar sleep temperature comfort levels.

We can delve into the specifics of the following suggestions, and there will be a variety of additional options.

  • Naturepedic Serenade Organic Mattress: Naturepedic mattresses are made with certified organic materials, including wool in the comfort layer. The Serenade model offers a medium-firm feel and is designed to provide pressure relief and support for different sleep positions. @TheCleanBedroom can advise you more on all the features this mattress offers along with other great choices!

  • Birch Natural Mattress: Birch mattresses feature a wool comfort layer sourced from New Zealand, known for its breathability and moisture-wicking properties. The mattress also incorporates organic cotton and natural latex for a comfortable and sustainable sleep surface.

  • My Green Mattress Natural Escape: With GOTS-certified organic cotton, GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, and New Zealand wool in the comfort layer, the Natural Escape mattress from My Green Mattress offers a supportive and breathable sleep surface suitable for various preferences.

  • My Green Mattress Kiwi: @My_Green_Mattress Kiwi features organic cotton, organic Dunlop latex, and New Zealand wool in its comfort layers, providing a comfortable and sustainable sleep experience with natural temperature regulation and support.

Given some of these choices, other mattresses such as the the available split comfort @dlx premier series, @EngineeredSleep Duo and split comfort options from perhaps all of the latex focused Trusted Members, either as it or adding a 2-3" wool mattress topper will indeed help you regulate each of your sleep temperature requirements.

Purchasing a mattress to accommodate the varying needs of couples with differing body profiles, temperature preferences, and firmness requirements can be nuanced. Seeking guidance from an experienced mattress professional can greatly impact the outcome of your selection process.

Moreover, these professionals can offer insights into selecting an appropriate mattress base. Factors such as the placement and spacing of slats, tailored to the mattress and the combined weight of the sleep system, are crucial. Additionally, considerations like center support legs and the array of options available for adjustable bases play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless functioning of the entire sleep system.

I am quite sure a few of our named Trusted Members will offer additional insight for your mattress journey and select.

All the best in your journey,

Maverick

Hi @DrSuss,

Happy to hop in and make some recommendations on behalf of our products. Most importantly, I hope you can find something you love! Mattress shopping is not fun and it seems you have had to do a lot of it the last few years. I think someone here will have a good options for you.

I will keep it pretty simple - our DUO Latex or DUO Memory with our King Split-Support would both be good options. Since you sleep hot - the DUO Latex would be the best option for you.

We use a TPS QuadCoil for the support and Dunlop Latex + Organic Cotton for the comfort layer.

Here is a video of me explaining how our King Split-Support option works (and it will also help explain how our DUO Mattresses in general work). They are made in 2 pieces - with the comfort and support separated.

I think the flexibility of changing the feel will be helpful for you - especially after trying so many mattresses. Also, as Maverick mentioned, the hybrid model sounds like a good fit for you and your wife.

I am happy to answer any specific questions. Feel free to email me at [email protected].

Good luck!
