Help! Need recommendations!

I have been in search for the perfect mattress and don’t know what to try next!

I am smaller - 118 lbs, have chronic pain/fatigue/hyper-mobility, sleep hot, I love very soft mattresses, stomach/side sleeper

My husband - 230 lbs, low back pain, he prefers a more medium feel due to support but isn’t opposed to a soft feel, back/side sleeper

Our first mattress purchase was a super plush pillow top beautyrest. It was great, we both loved the feel but after 6-7 years it was causing both of us pain in the mornings. Decided to try out memory foam after sleeping on a friends old cheap Ashley memory foam mattress. First tried a cheaper Amazon mattress but ended up being too firm, tried adding toppers but they were too hot. Next we went with a Sealy posturpedic “plush” but it also ended up being very firm for me. I have never liked the feel of Tempurpedics so never gave those a chance. Next I got on the latex kick wanting to try something new but there weren’t many options to try in person. We both really liked the plush Avocado in store but with my indecisiveness I was too scared to invest the money. We settled for a Mygreenmattess with the plush Avocado 2in topper, thinking it might give the same feel…it doesn’t though. My husbands pain has improved with it but I don’t love it…it’s not terrible but I’ve had shoulder pain/pressure with it and my back is still sore in the mornings. When I get into bed it’s just “meh”…I want to feel like omg this is the best mattress ever but I might have unrealistic expectations

Anyways my husband is tired of my search and I need recommendations!! I have researched endlessly and it’s overwhelming with all the online marketing - it’s hard to tell what is actually good quality for the money. My next thought is maybe a softer talalay instead of the Dunlop in the mygreen. I have seen a few companies that have the 14ild, I like the springiness and response of the latex vs feeling stuck but do want a little hug like a typical plush pillow top offers. Budget wise I’d like to stay under $3000 for a king.

Edit to add: a few I’m currently looking into amerisleep Organica plush, DLX but read somewhere they only have Dunlop, and Arizona premium mattress

Your issue should be a very solvable mattress situation, and it’s clear you have definitive ideas of what works for your husband and yourself. With your lower body weight, chronic pain, and preference for a soft, plush feel that doesn’t trap heat or feel restrictive, you’re right to be focusing on latex, particularly options that offer low ILD top layers for pressure relief. Talalay latex has traditionally been the go-to for that ultra-plush, springy surface, but the gap between Talalay and modern Dunlop has narrowed considerably. Thanks to improvements in processes like continuous pour and RF Vulcanization, newer high-quality Dunlop can now offer better consistency, more even density, and even a surprisingly soft and responsive feel that works well in comfort layers. So brands like DLX, which uses Dunlop, may actually provide a very comfortable and pressure-relieving experience without relying on Talalay.

It’s also important to remember that support and plushness are two different things. A mattress can and should offer proper support, particularly through its core layers, while still delivering the plush, pressure-relieving surface feel that makes it comfortable. This is especially true in hybrid designs, where a strong coil or firm latex support system can be combined with softer top layers to give both spinal alignment and luxurious softness.

Your husband, at 230 lbs and dealing with lower back pain, needs that supportive core and possibly zoned layers to prevent hip sink and maintain alignment. A customizable or split-firmness latex mattress from a company like Arizona Premium Mattress, Sleep EZ, or Flobeds, and Custom Sleep Technology would allow both of you to dial in your side individually, whether you end up with soft Talalay, soft Dunlop, or some combination. These brands also offer the ability to swap layers post-purchase, which is particularly helpful when dealing with chronic pain and changing needs over time.

If you’re still finding your MyGreenMattress setup too firm or lacking that cozy, pressure-relieving hug, you might try a 2-inch soft topper, either Talalay or modern soft Dunlop, in the 14 to 19 ILD range to bring back some of that plushness. Given your budget of $3,000 and clear understanding of what you’re looking for, you’re in a great position to invest in a well-built, fully latex or hybrid mattress that can finally offer both of you comfort and long-term support. The “omg” feeling might not be instant for everyone, especially with latex which tends to feel different than traditional pillow tops, but the right combination is definitely within reach. Additionally, folks like European Sleep Works, offers some great designs incorporating microcoils to achieve that soft contouring feel, while maintaining and promoting active air flow and the plush feel with great support you each need.

It should go without saying that the appropriate foundation is key to a successful mattress system, by ensuring uniform and appropriate support of the mattress is being provided.
