Help selecting mattress for light side sleepers

Hi Ken!

Me and my girlfriend are in need for a new mattress and it looks like the various hybrid models at APM might be a good fit. I’m 5’9" 150lbs and she’s 5’6" 135lbs, and we are both side sleepers. We were thinking that the Queen Eco Hybrid with the Bolsa coil upgrade would be the best place to start. Would you suggest the #19 plush or the #28 medium for us? If it helps at all, I would say that I’m kind of bony, and she and I both have some issues with shoulder pain, but not anything too crazy.

Also, do the mattresses come with the same cover sold on the store, or is it a different one? My understanding is that the mattress does not need a box spring, but are slatted beds or platform beds better in the long run?

Thank you so much!

Yesterday my partner and I were able to try a firm and a medium Avocado Green Mattress. Surprisingly, I felt that the medium was too soft, and felt weirdly wiggly? When I first laid down on the medium I felt somewhat seasick, and as the time went on and I adjusted in the bed, it only got worse. It felt like I was “in” water and the bouncing was a lot.

The firm, on the other hand, was perfectly fine. It felt soft and nice without giving me that seasick feeling. It could be that the topper on the medium is just worn down over time, but it’s still making me lean towards the #28 medium for us instead of the #19 plush. I looked on Avocado’s website and this is how they describe these mattresses:

  • Avocado Green Firm: 3 inches of Dunlop latex. 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft) and a 1-inch layer (D65) in the base.
  • Avocado Green Medium: 5 inches of Dunlop latex. 2 inches in the pillow-top layer (D65), plus 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65) and 1 inch (D65) in the base.

Given that the medium we tried is actually 4 total inches on the top of the mattress (and it’s Dunlop), I don’t know how much it compares to the 3 inch options that APM provides.

Basically, I’m more unsure now whether to go with the medium or plush option for the APM mattress.

Just wanted to update this topic. I spoke to @Arizona_Premium on the phone this morning and he was able to help me with this! For anyone searching in the future:

  • He suggested the Eco Hybrid with the Bolsa upgrade (we are side sleepers) and a 3" #28 Medium Talalay Latex.
  • He let me know that the mattress cover APM uses is not as fluffy and overdone compared to the Avocado, which I think contributed to my feeling of seasickness on the medium Avocado. I was not aware I did not like super fluffy tops so this was very useful to know.
  • We elected for the medium talalay instead of the soft because we liked a firmer feel, and in Ken’s experience many people with our builds and sleep orientation have loved this topper.

All in all, a great, insightful, and professional interaction all around. I’ll confirm with my girlfriend later today and hopefully put an order in later this evening!

My pleasure,it is easier speaking directly on the phone as I can ask questions that may be more relevant for my recommendation.
