How does price matching work at major retailers?

I have been looking for a new mattress for a few weeks, and I have come down to a few top choices. The one that my girlfriend and I like the most is the Stearns & Foster Estate 14.5" Firm Mattress ($2099.99). It feels great, but we are having a hard time spending that much on a mattress.

Walking through a bunch of stores yesterday, we visited a local mom & pop place that had a bunch of other furniture, but my girlfriend points out they have a few mattresses. Lo and behold, one of them is the Stearns & Foster Estate 12" Firm and inexplicably, the price is $1,100. I ask a guy there to check if they have the 14.5 mattress, and he has to call his manager. They have that model, but he quotes me $1,500, an unbelievable deal. He wrote me an invoice, and I said I would call to follow up.

I went to a Mattress Firm later that day and asked the salesman whether he could price match the other store. He checked with his manager, but he said he would not be able to match it.

From what I was told by other Mattress Firm salespeople, and from what’s on their website FAQ:

Our low price guarantee is simple – we guarantee the lowest price, or it’s free.

If you find the same or comparable mattress set for less than our displayed or advertised price, simply bring in the advertisement or invoice, and we will beat your price by 10% – or it’s FREE.

Is there something I need to acquire or something to do in order to get a store to be able to price match it this offer? Or is price matching a mattress not like getting a price match with other goods and I’m not really able to get them to honor the price of another store?

You might need a high-powered attorney :rage: to tackle this. The issue is that Stearns & Foster, like many brands, often creates essentially the same mattress but gives it different names for each retailer. This makes direct comparisons difficult because the names are not the same.

According to their guarantee, they use the term COMPARABLE. In theory, if two mattresses are virtually the same but have different names because they’re made exclusively for different retailers, they should be considered comparable. However, in practice, stores might argue that minute differences—like 2.345678 inches of viscoelastic memory foam versus 2.345679 inches—mean they are not truly COMPARABLE. It’s frustrating, but that’s the kind of argument you’re likely to face. Particularly at the retailer you happened to have chosen.

Additionally, make sure you get in writing the details of their return policy, refund terms, restocking fees, and check their reputation and reviews. I call these the 4 R’s: Return, Refund, Restocking, and Reputation.

Best of luck,

Maverick
