Hi,
I’m new here. We currently are sleeping on a Kingsdown duet Cline (firm tight top) bought in 2013 from a S’eep country. We used the accompanying split box spring (king bed) and basic metal frame, though the mattress sagged in either side of the middle within months (and the box springs sagged, interestingly. In 2015, after having a baby, we it the mattress in the floor (cosleeping with baby). Baby #2 came on Halloween 2018. My husband was sick of sleeping on the floor, so I built a bed frame (2x6 spruce for rails, footboard, and base of headboard, with doubled up 2x4 spruce for legs and 2x2 spruce for slat supports on rails). I used IKEA’s metal midbeam (Skorva) and Luroy slats.
The mattress has felt very squishy to me, and I felt I was getting stuck in valleys in it, so I have just switched out the Luriy slats (bowed, 2" wide, x17) for the older Sultan Lade slats (1X4, solid wood, flat). This feels a bit firmer, but the mattress still seems squishy, with my hips really sinking into it. We are considering replacing the mattress, but it seems early (6.5 years - my parents always kept mattresses for decades!). How do we know it’s time to replace it? My husband has no issues with the mattress, but he tends to be close to the edge, while I’m near the middle, sandwiched between my baby and small child. I have also got bigger (two pregnancies, and am now carrying more weight than prior to the last pregnancy. I’m 5’3" and 165 lb, and used to be more like 145 lb (about 175 lb when pregnant).
If we replace it, I am looking at a latex (Dunlop) 8 or 9" mattress (firm base with 2-3" soft on top). Does my bed frame sound ok or should I modify it? Slats are 3.5" wide and 2-2.5" apart, and metal Skorva midbeam has no feet going to the floor, which is typical for IKEA beds - I’m considering adding 3 feet under the bed.
Thank you!
Mary
