Hybrid or Latex-that is the question

I have been a serial mattress shopper for many years. I am writing this post in the hopes that this community can put me on the right track.
I am a 72 yo woman weighing 135lbs and sleep primarily on my side. I have mild scoliosis and compressed discs in my lower back which cause me discomfort when I sit and lay on my back. My right side hurts more than my left, so I rarely move from my left side during the night. I tried a Saatva Zen Haven bed but found both sides to be too firm causing shoulder and hip pain. Then I got a Plushbeds Eco Bliss (foam) bed and their 3" medium Talalay topper thinking that would help with the shoulder and hip pain. Now I am noticing that my lower back hurts when I get out of bed. While laying in the bed, I feel like my back is uneven when I lay on my side even though I use a pillow between my legs to keep my back on one level. I tried the topper alone on a Beauty Rest innerspring mattress we have in the guest room thinking I needed that support and could barely get out of the bed and stand up. The medium topper seems soft enough to avoid pressure-point pain, so at least I got that right,

Should I consider a hybrid with pocket coils and talalay latex, or should I go with a combination of talalay and dunlop latex and if so what ILD should I go for. The Saatva had a medium firm side and a medium side and I didn’t find any of those soft enough to sleep comfortably on my side.
I would appreciate any advice you can give. Thank you

Hello rfnewyou and thanks for the inquiry! Latex and coil hybrids typically last 10-15 years and all-latex mattresses typically last 15-20 years. All-latex mattresses offer a much finer degree of adjustability than latex and coil hybrids do. All-latex mattresses can be adjusted to be slightly softer, moderately softer, much softer, or slightly firmer, moderately firmer, much firmer. You can increase the pressure relief slightly, moderately, or vastly. You can increase the back support slightly, moderately, or vastly. Since latex and coil hybrids normally have only 2 components (3” of latex and the coils) you really have limited options to adjust the mattress, and any change that is made is normally a big change. Not everyone needs the level of adjustability that the all-latex mattress offers. As such, customers will choose latex and coil hybrids if they’re 250 pounds or less; like the feel of a latex and coil hybrid; want a mattress with more edge support than all-latex mattresses; like the lower price point; and / or want to retain some of the feel of a standard spring mattress while getting some of the benefits of latex.

If you choose an all-latex mattress, I would definitely recommend 3" of soft Talalay for the top layer, 3" of medium Dunlop for the middle layer, and 3" of firm Dunlop for the bottom layer, and I would recommend this for both sides of the mattress. Even though both sides would be the same, I would still recommend splitting all of your layers. The top soft Talalay should provide all the contour and pressure relief needed to avoid any pressure point issues and will add secondary support to the mattress. The bottom two (medium and firm Dunlop) layers should provide all the support needed to maintain proper spinal alignment and avoid back pain.

Thanks for getting back to me. My husband is a back and stomach sleeper except when he snores and i make him flip to his side (this is a nightly occurrence) so can i get a split king with the support he needs. Hes currently using a talalay 3 inch topper as well but the plushbed ecobliss foam is definitely not supportive enough for him. And one last question, if all of this is a split and it doesnt work for me could i replace a dunlop layer with a coil layer as a last resort. I havent slept on coils for a very long time but with all the issues I’ve had, it would be nice to know i have a last ditch option.
Thanks again for your help.

Yes that’s not a problem! You can ask us to split all the layers, and there’s no extra charge for that. We could probably send you 6" coils to replace the 6" of Dunlop if you need us to, but the coils aren’t returnable, just FYI.

Hi,

We have two 3 inch medium talalay toppers, and one 3 inch soft topper from plushbeds. These are all twin size. Since we want a split king, can we use these toward our new bed. I do want to make sure they all work together well.

Also, for my husband, he normally doesn’t have any back issues although I think the foam ecobliss by plushbeds is definitely too soft for him. The 3 inch medium topper he uses is just to keep us on the same level so the dog doesn’t have a hard time navigating between us. So I just want to make sure I get his side right too.

So for my side you are recommending a 3 inch firm Dunlop, 3 inch medium Dunlop, and a 3 inch soft talalay for me. I would imagine you would recommend the same base layers for my husband but the medium 3 inch topper for him since he has no issues.

Can you tell me what the cost would be and the process for ordering and shipping.

Thanks
Ruth Fisher (rfnewyou)

Just to clarify, twin XL layers are the same size as a king mattress. Twin layers are 5" shorter than twin XL and king layers.

If you can just confirm what size layers you need and let me know exactly what layers you’d need to complete the mattress, I can get you a price. We don’t charge for shipping or sales tax.

Hi,

We want 2 twin xl’s. If we can use the 2 talalay toppers we have for the top layer (3" soft, 3" medium) then we need a firm Dunlop layer, and a medium Dunlop layer for each side. I would like a cover made from a material that will not make the top tighter/harder. I’m not sure what choices I have for that.

Thanks

OK great! So a twin XL medium Dunlop layer is $219 and a firm is $239.40 so the total price would be $916.80 with no charge for shipping or sales tax. I normally recommend this company for covers without wool in them - Organic Mattress Covers | FoamOrder and I believe their 60/40 cover would change the feel of the mattress the least.

Thanks
So we just order the cover separately and put it on ourselves? Other than non-wool, do you have any recommendations. I sleep hot and want it to reduce heat, and of course the softness is important. I also would like something natural (no odors or chemicals) and something we can wash. I will reach out to them with the questions, but thought I would get your input as well.

Thanks so much
Ruth

Yes exactly, you would order the cover from them (or another company) and put the layers in the cover. Although wool is outstanding at temperature regulation and wicking away moisture, latex is also outstanding at temperature regulation because it is an open-celled and naturally breathable product; so latex is a great “ventilation system” that will draw body heat away from you and allow it to dissipate into the mattress and foundation. The stretch cover allows you to be closer to that natural latex “ventilation system” which would allow the mattress to sleep cooler than if you had the cotton & wool cover.

Great, so the 60/40 you recommend is the same as the 40/60 listed in their website.

Ruth

Oh yeah, sorry I got the numbers backward

No problem.

What thickness do we order and do we need to do the prewashing they offer.

Ruth

If you have 9" of latex you would order the 9" cover, and I don’t know enough about their covers to answer your last question with certainty, I would ask their advice on that.

Thanks.
Where can I find warranty and return information on the mattress layers we have been discussing.

Ruth

DIY mattresses have a 30 day return policy and you can only return one component of the mattress, not the whole mattress. You can exchange one layer (per customer or household) or you can return one layer (per customer or household). If you decide to return one component the cost would be $45 and if you decide to exchange one component the cost would be $45. DIY mattresses have only a 1 year warranty that covers body impressions.

You can view that info here - Return Policy – Latex Mattress Factory and here - Warranty – Latex Mattress Factory

Hi,

I just realized that you have a showroom not too far from where I live. I think I would like to come there and see what the differences are between the firm and extra firm dunlop. Is that possible.

Thanks
Ruth
