Just a solid innerspring mattress for a side sleeper in Bay Area, CA

Hi,
I am new here so please forgive me if I am doing something wrong but I definitely have analysis paralysis from spending too much time on reddit and youtube. I really do not want to purchase something I do not have the chance to try out in the store so the bed in a box aren’t an option. I went to a total of 5 different stores about a month ago and ended up confused and frustrated. My old mattress was very simple and lasted me 10 years but started causing me pain so it was time to go. I ended up settling on a Beautyrest Black series 3 firm mattress which was the polar opposite of my last mattress. It felt great in the store, but by that point I was so tired of trying different mattresses and hearing different salespitches I just wanted to go home. I told the salesperson I hate memory-foam. I have back issues and need solid support and memory foam has never provided that for my spine (despite everyone wanting to argue with me that it does). I do not want to feel like I am sinking into the mattress. I want to feel like I am sleeping on the mattress. When the Beautyrest arrived it was MASSIVE. That night I tossed and turned all night. I realized I had basically purchased a memory foam mattress on top of an innerspring mattress which imo is pointless. I returned it and got what I thought was a simple innerspring mattress, Sleepys by Sealys Spring Firm. It was fine for about a week and then I noticed I was having pain all over. There is this noticeable hump in the middle of the bed which is supposed to be lumbar support but it actually just ends up throwing my hips up which has jacked up my low back and upper back. At this point I am sleeping on the couch and will go back to the store this weekend to see if I can return yet another mattress, but the next one they suggested was a Sterns and Foster, which is almost $3000 and I have read that one just ends up sagging like most do. I am unsure what to do at this point and just want a solid inner spring mattress that isnt a cement block but also wont sag. Does this even exist in the stores anymore?

Hello,
I’m kinda new at this too, but that seemed to work! Let’s see if this reply does too. Please feel free to call the store (or just come in) and chat with us. The salespeople will be happy to talk about your trouble finding the right mattress. I feel like I type this in every reply, but the support for the mattress (and even the bedding) need to be part of the equation, as a lousy platform or bed frame can ruin the support of even the best mattress, and the wrong mattress pad can reduce support, and increase pressure (not to mention being sweaty). The pillow is an important part of the equation as well We have all of our styles and firmnesses available to try out, and you can take all the time you need to feel them (we will be there to help fit you as well). I’ll be away this week for questions, but there’s always someone there who can walk you through it. (I promise there is no memory foam, polyurethane, gel, or otherwise :)). Hope to see you soon! (even if you don’t end up getting a mattress from us, I promise you will learn something).

Hey there hloduca,

As someone who has visited @EuropeanSleep in Berkeley, I can confidently say you’re in for quite an experience. I happened to stop by their showroom during a trip to Berkeley in February, and I was really impressed with the care and detail they incorporate in finding the best fit of a mattress for you preferences. Having slept on a variety of mattresses, horsehair, hybrids (non-latex), innerspring, a couple of legacy brands like the Serta Perfect Sleeper 1986 and Sealy Posturepedic 2011, and now a HD hybrid—the selection at ESW was fantastic. The Nordic II HDM and Heritage mattresses were some of the most comfortable latex mattresses I’ve tried. With the Nordic II, I could actually feel the contouring as it was happening while I laid on it.

Though I’m a firm mattress enthusiast, I found the contouring and plush feel of their firmer versions of the two mattresses mentioned to be surprisingly comfortable and appealing.

I also decided to get fitted for an Oxygen pillow, even though I’ve previously tried both solid Dunlop and Talalay pillows without much luck. The Oxygen pillow, along with the wedge topper, made such an impression that I ended up ordering both. They’ve been in use ever since they were delivered to my home on the East Coast. I’m also excited to try their new latex cube pillow, since I’m a bit of a pillow fanatic with an extensive collection.

I’m sure you’ll find the perfect match for your needs when you visit. Definitely check out their bed frames too, they’re solid as a rock, with slats that won’t budge, ensuring your mattress performs perfectly.

When you do visit, be sure to follow up and let me know how your experience went and which mattress you ended up choosing.

We are in South Berkeley, on Adeline just north of Ashby. Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 12-5. Please let them know you are from the Mattress Underground, and make sure to take advantage of the offer if you end up getting a mattress. Also let them know the problems you have been having. (FYI, Saturdays can be busy. Earlier on either day and Sundays are often more mellow. Regardless, you will always get good help, just sometimes there can be a bit of a wait.) Cheers! (Thanks for the kind words, Maverick!)

Ok great! I’m dedicating the weekend to trying to return my current mattress and look for a new one. Will be going to sleep 365 in Los Altos too since I’ve read good things about them as well. I’m not very familiar with latex or hybrids so I guess I was very resistant to it before because I thought it was a similar material to memory foam which I hate but after doing some research it sounds like a hybrid might be a perfect fit for my current situation. Thank you for the help both of you :pray:t2:

Hi there,
I am curious how long on average it takes to get a mattress from you guys if I decide to go with your company? I only ask because right now I am sleeping on the couch and it is also causing me pain and loss of sleep…I read it can take a month?

You need a hybrid mattress with latex foam not memory foam. I got a perfect one from Mattress Makers in San Diego. The Soledad. You get to choose the firmness of the latex. It zips out so you are able to try different firmnesses. The people there are so nice. It’s family owned. Talalay latex is the best. Good luck.

I recently purchased 2 different mattresses from them, a Nordic 2 for my wife and heritage for me. Both of us are sleeping better than we ever have before and can’t recommend them enough! The pillows are fantastic and the mattresses are incredible! Go try them out and you’ll be glad you did.

Sorry for the delay in reply! I’m just back from a get away and digging out… Turn around is usually pretty quick, but depends a lot on which model and where we are bringing it (a month is possible but rare). The Heritage mattresses can take longer, but the Classic and HDM mattresses are mostly ready to go. Did you come by? Feel free to call if you have any questions

Thanks for the feedback! Remember to make sure the platform and frame are both super sound, and also that the washable cover is compatible.
