King-sized Latex Hybrid Comfort Layer

My husband and I are currently on the hunt for a new mattress, as the impressions in ours (BeautyRest Platinum Back Care 3x) are too much to tolerate after 6.5 years. We also want to upgrade to a King.

Some stats:

  • Husband: 5’ 9”, 190lb, combination sleeper that attempts to spend most time on back due to having a CPAP but also sleeps some on side or stomach, recently had back surgery due to disc herniation, sleeps VERY hot

  • Me: 5’ 8”, 140lb but currently a few months postpartum so typically closer to 125ish, stomach sleeper but also spending a good amount of time on my side currently for nursing

  • Hoping to keep our budget around $2k or less for a King

We both dislike the “trapped” feeling we get with memory foam, especially since we end up with a dog, toddler, and baby in bed at various times. Based on reading here, we thought we’d like something with latex and stopped by a couple showrooms near us to test whether we liked the feel. I liked the @NestBedding Owl in Firm the best, but I’m waffling over the price.

All of this has led me to an @Arizona_Premium Ultimate Hybrid. The Owl, however, has the additional 1.5lb comfort foam. I liked that the Owl felt supportive with the firm but had a little bit more of a “sinking in” feeling without getting trapped. Is there a way to recreate that? Maybe a softer latex topper? I’m not familiar enough with foam to know what the equivalent ILD would be. I really want the support of a firm for how we usually sleep stomach/back but with some extra comfort so my shoulder doesn’t go numb while lying in bed nursing.

Last question is whether the combi-zone coils are likely to be a good fit for us or if we should look for something without zones?

Appreciate any help for my analysis paralysis!

@Arizona_Premium

Hello, I am also debating the Nest Owl Latex Hybrid in firm. Loved it in store but it is pricey. We are also considering the DLX LatexLux hybrid but have found little reviews online. Not sure if anyone here can speak to the LatexLux Hyrbid. @DLX

The LatexLux is a new model for us, so the number of reviews might be very limited, and we understand the concerns. Keep in mind that the LatexLux is almost identical to the Premier Hybrid, with the only difference being the three-inch layer. The Premier uses high-performance polyfoam, whereas the LatexLux uses Dunlop latex—everything else is the same. Perhaps @Maverick or fellow undergrounders can provide feedback on the Premier and their experience dealing with us.

If you liked the Owl, the LatexLux could be a great option for you. Plus, the mattress is designed with a zipper, so we can adjust the comfort if we miss the mark. We just ask that you sleep on it for 30 days; if something is missing, give us a shout. We’ll ask a few questions and possibly conduct some in-home tests to understand what is going on and how to make you comfortable. We can then send out a different layer to make the mattress more comfortable.

Hey BB,

As @DLX mentioned, I have experience with the DLX Premier Series line, which includes the Latexlux and Memorymax models. I previously bought one of these mattresses for my mother-in-law, who is 86 and dealing with hip and knee replacements, among other age-related issues.

I called DLX and was able to order a mattress sight unseen with a firm side and a medium side, as we weren’t sure which firmness she would prefer. Their team was incredibly helpful, especially since split queen sizes aren’t commonly available.

The reason she needed a new mattress was that she had previously bought a BeautyRest from a local furniture store—without my input, of course!:exploding_head:—which turned out to be more expensive than the DLX. Unfortunately, after just over a year, she was experiencing significant back pain. Upon investigation after removing the sheets from the mattress, I found a deep indent (a NY Sized Pothole) where her hip rested, which was quite disappointing.

I quickly arranged for DLX to create the custom combination mattress for her since she couldn’t test it beforehand. Thankfully, it turned out to be incredibly comfortable. Within a few days, her pain diminished to typical age-related discomfort. It’s reminiscent of the high-quality mattresses from decades ago that lasted 20+ years. My wife also remarked on how comfortable and supportive it felt when we tested it while watching TV for an hour after setting it up.

Sure, I could have started a warranty issue with BR, but I know how that system works and it would be 2035 before the issue would be resolved. Unlike how DLX works…You have an issue, they just solve it and move on" no BS just results. The individual reviews here and on reddit speak to their top notch customer service quite favorably.

While the Nest product is very good, you may find that a smaller regional company that offers a bit more personalized collaboration and perhaps a bit better overall construction for what you are searching.

Of course everyone’s experiences will vary as comfort is a subjective and slight differences in construction, spring gauges and foam ILDs can provide a different feel to the sleeper searching for the perfect mattress. While some mattresses offer a lot of flexibility on the arrangement of mattress layers, I think you would find that the comfort layer options for the DLX would be more than sufficient to satisfy most sleepers preferences and needs.

I would encourage you to investigate their 4R’s, Return policy, Restocking Fees, Refund and Reputation. That was one of the concerns that made it easy to purchase from DLX. No hard feelings if it did not work. They just take it back, fortunately we nailed it on the first shot.

I hope my personalize experience with @DLX will help you with your decision, and dont forget to take advantage of their addition TMU MUGster bonus.

I would be happy to answer any other questions you might have regarding DLX, Nest or any other choice you may be considering.

All for a best night’s sleep,

Maverick

Thanks for reaching out to us. The zoned coils work well for extra lumbar support which is what back and stomach sleepers need however it’s not the best choice for side sleepers. I suggest doing a custom build with our Bolsa coil system (non zoned) followed by a 2" Medium dunlop topper with 2" of Soft Talalay on top all covered in our 10" Bamboo/Wool zippered cover. You will find all these items in our DIY components section on DIY Components
