Latex topper help - abdomen sinking, shoulder pain

I’m looking for some help with a topper for my current mattress. I am thinking about getting a Talalay latex topper. I’m looking at the soft, medium-soft or medium natural Talalay (unless there are other suggestions), and whether 2 inches would be the right thickness.

I’m trying to recreate the feel of my previous mattress while getting enough support to prevent soreness. I’ve included some background below in case it helps with a recommendation.

(note, I’m in canada and reached out to mfc recently, but haven’t heard back just yet and just learned about this part of the forum)

My previous mattress:

For about 13 years, I slept on a Beautyrest Preston from Sleep Country. It was extremely soft (plush, high loft, pocket coil) but also surprisingly responsive, and it supported my abdomen when sleeping in a sort of side/three-quarter position (similar to a mountain climber position). I had no pressure pain in my hips or shoulders, and it also resolved back soreness and SI joint issues I’d experienced with a firmer mattress.

Unfortunately, the foam eventually began to compact, creating a U-shaped dip.

My current mattress and what I’ve tried:

I bought a Beautyrest MOD 3 (discontinued) from Sleep Country. Its micro coils provide the responsiveness I need to support my abdomen, but the mattress causes significant shoulder pressure, including hand numbness, as well as some hip pressure. When I returned to my old mattress, the numbness went away.

I’ve tried several polyurethane foam toppers, but they either compressed too much without providing enough support or felt too firm. (I hate memory foam)

I then tried a 2-inch soft Dunlop latex topper. This was the first thing that felt anything like my old mattress, even though the Preston didn’t contain latex. I loved the feel, and it completely resolved the shoulder issue and hip pressure. I also didn’t feel as though I was bottoming out, so I’m wondering whether 2 inches is the right thickness.

However, the Dunlop didn’t quite support my abdomen enough, which caused soreness. I tried placing a folded towel under the topper in the abdominal area to provide additional support. This seemed to help my abdomen, but not completely, and is not super comfortable.

My questions:

Given these results, would anyone recommend trying soft, medium-soft or medium natural Talalay topper? I was told it’s more responsive? I’m hoping to retain the pressure relief I experienced with the soft Dunlop while gaining a little more support for my abdomen and heard Talalay might be right for the job.

I’d also appreciate any advice on whether 2 inches is the best thickness, or whether another option might work better.

I’d be interested in any general thoughts on how best to balance the needs of people who sleep in a three-quarter position and need substantial pressure relief while still requiring enough support in specific areas?

I’m extremely nervous to go much harder since I’m so sensitive to pressure pain.

A little additional context:

I’m only 5’1”, normally an average weight, although my weight has varied over the years due to thyroid issues (my soft mattress always seemed to good even at heavier weights, so I suspect weight is less important for me than it might be normally?). I’m also bedbound for more than 23 hours a day and use a completely separate hospital bed when I’m not sleeping. I suspect some of my health issues contribute to my sensitivity to pressure, so avoiding shoulder and hip pain is particularly important.

I have a couple of weeks left on my Sleep Country trial, so I’m hoping to find a workable solution before it ends or else I may be back with completely different questions :joy:.

Thanks in advance for any assistance with this.
