I am looking at purchasing a mattress from quality sleep shop in Illinois and just want an opinion on whether or not it makes a difference on longevity of the mattress when the latex is a topper or built into the mattress? I am looking at two options the first one is what they call Everest with a 3inch talalay latex topper and the other bed is the Katherine that has the 3inches built into the comfort layer. I like the topper idea because you can flip and rotate it to make it wear more evenly and change it out whenever it wears out. What are your thoughts on this?
A topper will tend to be a little less durable than the same material inside the mattress because it can act more independently and will compress more and be more subject to wear and tear than the same layer inside a mattress. As you mentioned as well though … you would have the advantage of being able to replace the topper if it softens or breaks down faster than the mattress (which is likely) without having to replace the entire mattress. A topper will also feel and respond differently than having the same layer inside the mattress (see the first page of posts in this thread along with posts #3 and #4 here).
Thank you for the reply, I will read all the posts you have attached. I tested these options for quite some time on each and even though the cost is just a few hundred dollars difference between the two I just want to make sure I am making an informed decision.
I almost went with a flippable two sided coil innerspring mattress and 3" 19 ILD topper. Unless have small kids or pets romping around on your bed placing stress on the latex… you could place a topper on the mattress, cover it with a typical stretchable mattress cover/pad, do the fitted sheet drill and be done with it. When the topper wears out many years from now, give to your aging dog.
I honestly like the way the separate topper feels and supports me. I have learned some very valuable information from this site and appreciate everyone’s knowledge. I feel I have a better chance at making a quality decision with this mattress purchase.
