My husband and I are in the market for a new mattress and starting to feel overwhelmed by the plethora of options. We currently have a Leesa which is 9 years old- we both liked it for the first 7-8 years. Within the last two years I have been having a lot of lower back pain which I originally attributed to pregnancy and then lifting my baby. But as I have strengthened my back, my back pain persists and is always worst in the morning.
My husband is 6ā tall, weighs 195, and is a side sleeper. He prefers a softer mattress and loves the feel of memory foam. He currently has no issue on our mattress, but dislikes when we have traveled and stayed on firmer traditional mattresses- worried that all latex mattress would be too firm.
I am 5ā6ā, 145 lbs and pretty split between side and back sleeping. I have more pain on my side than on my back. I want to have a more supportive base than we have now. I generally have liked hybrid mattresses, but think an all latex with a firm base layer would work well for me.
Neither of us have ever slept on a latex mattress and I am a little nervous about the switch and selecting the correct firmness. It sounds like something you need to get used to?
I have used the SleepEZ prediction and it comes up with the same for both me and my husband, but my gut would have been to make his side softer?
Other consideration- we live in a small rowhome with a tight stairway that the mattress would need to get up. This is why we ended up with a mattress in a box to begin with. I believe we would need something that can at minimum bend without damaging for transport.
Would love to know if there are existing or DIY mattresses you would recommend!
Thanks for reaching out to us, couples are rarely on the same page when it comes to mattress firmness which is why over 70% of our mattresses ship out in a dual firmness. Take a look at this model - King or Queen Adjustable Ultra Plush Latex Sleep System (Blended), #1 Selling Latex Mattress- Adjustable Ultra Plush, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products and I would recommend the Firmness choice of Medium/Firm. This is for the side by side base cores. You would have the Firm and he would have the Medium. On top of those cores you should get the 3" Soft #19 Talalay to help relieve those pressure points that each of you get when side sleeping. Watch the videos for a better understanding of how this model works and let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for reaching out! As expressed by AP, It can be a challenge to find the right mattress for a couple. A split of some kind usually solves this issue. If you want to go with a DIY option, you can choose either an all latex mattress or a hybrid and then split the top comfort layers. For example in latex, you could get a 6" firm latex core and top it off with some dunlop latex layers on your side for that extra support you like, while your husband could top it off his side with softer Talalay latex or even a top layer of memory foam since he prefers a softer mattress. The same thing can be done over some coils if you choose to go with a Hybrid model.
Best of luck to you, and feel free to ask more questions as you go through the process,
A latex mattress is fairly transportable - I know ours come in boxes that I have even been able to bring up our stairs myself (and Iām short).
If you are unsure, check to see if where you are buying from has a layer swap program. That would be reassuring as then you would know that you could swap things out if it was too firm for your husband. Latex can be customized to various firmnesses and is quite durable.
What is your mattress currently sitting on? That will affect the firmness.
You may want to take a look at our customizable Healthy Choice line as then you could customize by side.
