Folks. Have a PlushBeds “12” Circa 2018. Botanical Bliss Medium , configuration should be3" XFIRM bottom layer , 3"FIRM, 3" MEDIUM, 2"SOFT. Top layer Talalay, others Dunlop. Moved to guest room. Generally liked mattress, but soooooo heavy. Making the bed was a set up for back pain. And as we’ve gotten older 70’s, that issue became more acute. My wife has back issues, leaves me and i am back trouble waiting to happen. The natural “floppiness” of the latex exacerbated this issue I think.
So - figured needed a lighter weight split king with adjustable base (an additional benefit being that it lifts the head and foot helping with sheet access). Tried Termpur ProAdapt. Memory foam not for us. Returned (but of course still have the non-returnable base). Now on 11” Saatva Classic. Meh…. Too bouncy, both hate the feel of it. Don’t think we like the hybrid.
Me 6’ 145 lbs. lean. Mostly back, some side. She 5’3 130 lbs, mostly side and stomach.
Now what. PlushBeds has redone their line and it no longer has a Talalay top layer. All Dunlop. That gives me pause. And i’m left with the mattress weight concern. One other thing to mention. A quirk of the free layered design always ended up with the Mattress sides sort of off perpendicular. This can be “fixed” by careful relayering, but given how challenging it is to rezip to cover, not for the faint of heart.
Any advice appreciated. In Maryland. Mattress? How to deal with weight, etc…thanks in advance.
Let’s see if I can help. So you are looking for 2 TwinXL size latex mattresses and prefer Talalay, correct? We are a Talalay specialist and unlike other companies we prefer to keep the base core as it was made, 6" not 3". This will add more weight but fix your issues of the layers sliding around. A six inch TXL base core will weight about 50 lbs depending on the firmness. Add to that a 3" comfort layer and you will have only 2 pieces of latex for each mattress.
Dunlop latex does have a bit of different feel vs Talalay because of how it’s made. It is more dense and I generally recommend it for much heavier people than you or your wife. All Talalay is the best choice based on your info. Ken - thank you for the reply. I am musing still. The weight issue (of the mattresses themselves) is still worrisome - I’m not getting younger :-). And even with Twin XLs in the split king, you’ve still got to maneuver the interior long side. I have the thought to get a mid level sleep number bed and put a Talalay topper on it. I’d enclose the whole package in a mattress cover. Am I nuts to consider this (I already know the answer generally!) The idea being that I’d get the comfort layer but the support would be from the bladder. I’ve owned a sleep number bed before - and at the time, it was fine (we were younger). The background issue remains at our age wrestling with latex weigh and floppiness when changing sheets. It’s a recipe for a chiropractic visit. Thank you in advance
