Hi, I’m 105 lbs 5’7, back sleeper, looking for a new mattress that’s ideally as “natural” as possible. (Think Oeko-tek certified, fiberglass free, etc) I’m young and don’t experience many aches/pains from sleep, so I’m not too picky about mattresses. But I do think I should aim for plush/medium firmness due to my weight. Overall I feel like a latex hybrid would be the way to go, but I’m open to anything.
I’ve found a few latex hybrids that sound great, but they all have one major con- the weight. The lightest latex hybrid Queen size I can find is 100lbs. I’m quite strong, but I live alone and the idea of flipping a 120lb mattress every few months does sound daunting. (Not to mention setup!)
Experts, is the weight of the mattress as much of a concern as I’m making it? Are there any latex hybrids (or other materials) that aren’t so heavy? Bonus points if they’re available as soft-medium firmness and not just medium-firm.
Thank you!
You might find our Eco Sleep model to fit what you are needing. It’s under 100 lbs but also comes with a zippered cover which means you don’t have to flip the entire mattress, only the 3" latex layer inside which weighs about 40 lbs. You have the option of choosing Soft, Medium or Firm for that latex layer. Based on your info I think the Medium would be a good choice. It’s delivered rolled and compressed for easier installation and can be taken apart and split into 2 sections for moving. The cover and coil in one part and the latex in a second part. That way you don’t have any single piece that weighs more than 50 lbs. Check it out and let me know if you have any questions. Hi hleigh, and welcome to the Mattress Underground,
Many hybrids would not be flippable—you would simply need to rotate them, which may be a little easier than flipping them.
Naturepedic has a hybrid mattress that uses all-natural and organic materials—in fact, it was the first to be recommended by the Environmental Working Group. There is no fiberglass or harsh flame retardants—just natural and organic materials.
The most popular hybrid they sell is the EOS Classic. You can customize the firmness by side - and when it comes time to rotate the components, you would never have to lift the whole mattress, you would simply rotate the layers.
Naturepedic has a sale going on right now, too!
If you want a lower price point, you could look at the Serenade and the Concerto. There’s not as much customization with those, but still they would involve rotation, rather than flipping. And yes, all of these do come in, as you mentioned at a little over 100 pounds. But you don’t have to flip them.
Best of luck to you in your search! Let us know if we can help.
Thank you so much for the info! I didn’t realize the layers would add that much convenience - it sounds so nice to have to only flip/move 40lbs, and I can especially imagine it’s convenient for installation.Truthfully the EcoSleep was one of the first I seriously considered - especially because you offer Soft unlike many of the hybrid latex mattresses I initially saw. My reason against it was the return policy. I know I could try out different layers, but I’m so ready to be done with this mattress hunt!
Thank you so much though!
Thanks, I’m happy to be here! And really appreciate the response! This is great info. I’m so glad you mentioned the Naturepedic sale, because I hadn’t considered their EOS model due to budget (despite seeing so many recommendations for it) and this brings it right into budget.
I’m also looking at their Microcoils/latex free option, because, while I’m fine with the latex feel, it really isn’t my favorite sensation. Going to search for some more opinions and see what I find.
And thank you, the info about rotating instead of flipping is helpful! I didn’t realize that. I feel like it will still be difficult LOL. But maybe it’s worth it.
Keep in mind for the rotation that the layers of a queen will be split, so that could make it easier as you will have four parts to flip, rather than one big bulky mattress.
However, the rotation is definitely 3x easier with two people rather than one, so if you can get a friend or family member to help a couple times a year, that would make it much easier. Naturepedic recommends twice a year for rotating and flipping the components.
Best of luck with your search. Glad to hear the sale brings the price into your range. Let us know if we can help!
