I’m working on a custom latex mattress build using multiple components. Despite common DIY advice, this has proven highly complex, small changes in layer firmness, thickness, or order produce large, non-linear effects. Trial and error is no longer productive.
I’m looking to hire someone with deep, practical experience in latex mattress design who understands system-level interactions: comfort vs support, pressure distribution, alignment, and durability over time.
The goal is to evaluate an existing build and specify concrete changes, not general advice. I’m happy to compensate for serious, expert-level engagement.

I’m not sure whether you’re trying to dial in a mattress just for your own use, or whether you’re aiming to define a more generally replicable system.

You’re absolutely right that small changes in latex builds can produce outsized, non-linear effects. That’s very real, and it’s exactly why DIY trial-and-error tends to hit a wall. At the same time, I don’t think this is something that can be “calculated” in a deterministic way. Once you factor in ILD’s, thickness, layer order, body weight distribution, sleep position, room temperature, foam processing/procedures and compression depth, the variables explode pretty quickly, and there’s no realistic way to model outcomes precisely. Even systems like @CST Body Profile can be excellent predictors for an individual or couple, but there are still external variables. You can build a great mattress and then throw it off completely with the wrong pillow, or especially the wrong foundation.

That doesn’t mean you’ll never land on a build that checks all your boxes, but you’re right. It’s not always as straightforward as it’s made to sound.

In practice, even professional mattress designers aren’t solving this analytically. What they rely on is pattern recognition and constraint. That means identifying failure modes, eliminating large regions of the design space that are known to cause pressure, misalignment, or instability, and then making experience-based adjustments. It’s less about predicting exact feel, and more about understanding why a build behaves the way it does and which direction a change is likely to move it. Many manufacturers end up approaching this as asking what changes to the existing build will move comfort and support in the right direction for the sleeper.

Of course, that kind of educated trial-and-error can get expensive, since no one wants to keep shipping layers back and forth just to test hypotheses. And even from an engineering standpoint, once you add human subjectivity, things get nuanced fast.

So I think the real value of an expert here isn’t exact calculation, but informed diagnosis and guided process-of-elimination. That means narrowing the problem to a small set of plausible changes based on how the current system is actually engaging under load. If expectations are aligned around that, what you’re asking makes a lot of sense.

Let’s see if we can find someone willing to take this on from a more engineering-minded, but still practical, perspective.
