Looking for a new matress please help

I’m looking for a mattress for the Rio 5 adjustable bed base.My current bed is 10 years old and is a Beautyrest recharge pioneer luxury firm model. I have been using it on box springs.

I’ve been fairly happy with my current bed. I wouldn’t want anything firmer, I could probably go a tad softer if anything. I am a back sleeper with arthritis in my hips and lower back. 54 year old male, 5’9" 180lbs.

What do you recommend? I’ve been looking at the Premier Hybrid but I’m not sure if the firm or medium would be best. I’ll try to upload the tag to my current bed. But like I said I could probably benefit from just a tad softer feel.

Hi Soupy1970,

I am going to hijack DLX for just a moment. The ergomotion Rio 5 is one step up from the Rio 4, which is also the Yawnder4 and 5 (privately labeled) on yawnder.com, a friend of mine’s website and brick and mortar store.

I have written about this many times, I bought the DLX premier hybrid combined with the Yawnder4 for my 86yo MiLaw with multiple physical issues to shorten the story. They work like a perfectly fit glove to a hand. I happen to get her a split internal queen firm/med, after careful collaboration with DLX. She is 5’3 about 175 give or take, artificial hips and knees, spinal cancer diagnosis in January. Immediately got rid of her POS BeautyRest that failed the prior one year and a few months of ownership (bought without my consultation) and just ordered the DLX. Life changing experience for her. The combination of the two, has made her sleeping environment the perfect dream setting. I bought her new sheets, comforter, the works, and she does not complain one bit about the bedroom environment that was formerly a terrorist. I did not even bother trying to invoke the extended warranty she got on the BR. Some things are just not worth the wasted time, effort and hoops you have to jump threw.

Sorry to hi jack this here, but I just had to get it out there.

Thanks for replying. I have read some of your post which has helped me get to where i’m at now looking at DLX. I also saw where you mentioned the Yawnder4. I almost went with that one but the 5.0 looks like it has a better wall saving feature. I compared the Yawder price to the Rio knowing they are the same. I found a good deal on the Rio 5.0 for $1,133 shipped from BedPlanet.

Does your mom prefer the firm or medium side? I like the firmness of my current matress but sometimes wish the top layer was just a tad more plush.

Thanks,
Ken

She sleeps on the firm side. She slept on the firm side since the day i set it up and she has never looked back.

The cover layer, has a bit of firm cushy feel. Not mush, but supportive.

Oh, by the way, if you order a split comfort layer, you would be hard pressed to identity where the split is located.

@soupy1970 Thank you for sharing the law tag and the additional information. It looks like you have a Beautyrest Pioneer Luxury Firm. If it’s something else, please let us know the model name, firmness, and height of the mattress. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any details about the Pioneer Luxury Firm.

In most cases, someone of your height, weight, and sleep position finds the Premier Hybrid comfortable, especially since you found the Beautyrest comfortable.

We would recommend the Premier 12" Medium.

Feel free to ask more questions — we’re happy to help!

The model of my current bed is Beautyrest Recharge. It was purchased 10 years ago. I’ve never slept on Latex, but would you recommend the Premier 12" over the 12" Latex Hybrid? I want firm support with a soft upper, but nothing I’ll sink into like traditional memory foam toppers I have tried.

This is subjective, but it depends on how much cushion you want. Keep in mind that we use 1.5" of high-density foam over the latex to mellow out the feel and add some softness.

With the latex, you will experience some initial softness, followed by the uplifting support of the latex cushion.

The Premier will provide deeper cushioning.

As you know, both the Premier and LatexLux models feature a zipper that allows access to the internal layer, so you’re not stuck if you select the wrong option.

I’m having second thoughts after reading some reviews on Reddit. It seems a lot of people were saying the medium was too soft. I’m thinking I should go with the split option. What’s the best way to get this changed?

Is The latex firmer? Now I think maybe the latex in a split Medium/firm Might be a safer bet. Please advise. My order number is DLX21591.

Thanks,

Always happy to help here on The Mattress Underground! However, emailing us at [email protected] is preferred to ensure we don’t miss anything in the forum or accidentally share your personal information when updating your order. The same people handle responses whether you contact us via the forum, email, or phone.

We can definitely switch your mattress to latex if you’re interested. If so, we would send you a link to pay the price difference between the Premier and the LatexLux, as latex is more expensive.

Yes, latex has a more buoyant and resilient feel that provides uplifting support, meaning you sleep more “on” it than “in” it.

Part of the decision-making process is purchasing something you feel confident will work for you. Buying something you don’t think will suit your needs might lead to regret when lying in bed wishing you had chosen differently.

Keep in mind that our recommendations are not foolproof—they’re simply comments based on what we know about firmness preferences, which are highly subjective. If you want something firmer, we recommend the LatexLux Medium. However, there’s always a chance (roughly 50/50) that the Firm Latex might feel too firm. Ultimately, we’re happy to accommodate whichever choice you’d like to make.

We’ve seen some comments on Reddit stating that the Medium feels more like a Soft. For those people, it did feel too soft. As these comments increased, we noticed a trend of customers leaning toward firmer options, but many later requested adjustments to make their mattresses softer. The key is understanding factors like your height, weight, sleep position, previous mattress preferences (which you’ve shared), and even what’s underneath the mattress.

I did send off an email a little bit ago. So you are recommending the latex in medium? Is that going to be comparable to the premier in firm? You can reply to my email. I’m good with paying the difference

I’d say stick with what you have for now and give it a solid 30 nights to settle in and see how it feels. If after that time you think you’d benefit from the latex, no problem at all—we can upgrade you then! You’d just pay the difference, and we’ll get a layer of latex sent your way to adjust the feel.
