Hello Jason,
Welcome to The Mattress Underground! It is great to see you doing such thorough research. Finding a single mattress that works for a 220 lb stomach sleeper (who needs firm support) and a 250 lb side sleeper with sciatica and arthritis (who needs deep pressure relief) is one of the hardest challenges to solve. Usually, one person ends up compromising, which leads to pain down the road.
As a chiropractor and mattress designer, I am very familiar with the models you have tested. In fact, at our showroom in California (Ultrabed), we carry both the Stearns & Foster Reserve and the Aireloom collections. They are both excellent, high-quality mattresses.
However, given your conflicting needs and your budget of under $4,000, I believe we can offer you a solution that doesn’t force either of you to compromise, and unlike a traditional Split King, keeps you together on one bed: A pre-customized, one-piece King mattress with dual-sided comfort.
Here is the setup I would recommend for your specific situation:
- For You (Stomach Sleeper, 220 lbs): On your side of the King, we can build it with the internal specifications of our Series 1. This features our robust 1000-count coil system and Lumbar-Flex Zoned Support , providing the flat, firm surface stomach sleepers need to prevent hyperextension of the lower back.
- For Your Partner (Side Sleeper with Pain, 250 lbs): On her side of the same mattress, we can build it with the internal specifications of our Series 3. With sciatica and arthritis, she needs significantly more pressure relief. The Series 3 feel offers a much more plush, “luxury” surface with thicker comfort layers of our buoyant Hypergel. The underlying zoning will still support her spine to help with the sciatica, but the surface will be gentle on her arthritis.
The Solution: Because our mattresses utilize our unique GripLock Modular cover system, we can configure a single King mattress where the internal layers are different on the left versus the right side. You get the firm support you need, she gets the plush relief she needs, and you have one seamless bed without the gap in the middle that comes with pushing two Twin XLs together.
This solution fits well within your $4,000 budget, offering you premium, targeted support that even the S&F Reserve or Aireloom likely can’t match for two different sleepers in one bed.
Important Note: Because this involves combining two different Series builds into one mattress, this is considered a “pre-customized” order. You won’t find a button for this specific combo on our standard checkout page.
Please reach out to us directly so we can set this up for you. You can visit our website at https://backscience.com to see the models, but to order this custom dual-sided King, please email us or give us a call at 800 667-1969. We can walk you through the details personally.
