Hi everyone! After 12 years with our current bed, we’re finally ready to upgrade to a king mattress that’s built to last. We don’t live near a direct-to-consumer mattress showroom, so we’re checking out brands available at Macy’s like Paramount, Shifman, and King Koil.
They look like high-quality options — tufted, well-padded, with decent coil systems — but we’re wondering how much of that is just marketing.
Has anyone tried these brands or know how they actually hold up over time? We’re trying to avoid the big “S” brands and really want something durable and worth the investment.

Shifman is a respected brand with a long-standing tradition of quality craftsmanship, one of my favorite brands. Paramount and King Koil also produce solid mattresses, especially in their upper-tier collections.
One important point to consider is that many department store models, such as those found at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Neiman Marcus, are often “exclusive editions” made specifically for those retailers. While these versions can still be high quality, they may differ in design or construction from the manufacturer’s standard lines. These differences can sometimes prioritize showroom appeal over long-term durability.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of perimeter foam encasement, which is common in department store offerings. I prefer edge-to-edge coil designs for better long-term support and airflow. Shifman, in particular, is known for double-sided construction and hand-tufting, which can contribute to better longevity.
Whatever brand you choose, always ask for a detailed build sheet or spec list that breaks down each layer. That will give you a clearer picture of the quality and how the mattress is likely to hold up over time.
Unlike the heavily marketed “big S” brands, these three tend to emphasize traditional craftsmanship rather than trendy features like gel foams or “cooling tech.” That said, it’s still worth checking that what’s under the surface justifies the price.

We were in a very similar situation earlier this year, looking for a long-lasting king mattress and considering Macy’s options since we didn’t have access to showroom only brands either.
We tested a few in-store and ultimately went with a Paramount Nature’s Spa model. It is been about 6 months now and we are genuinely impressed with the support and build quality. The tufting and materials do seem to make a difference and it is held up well so far no sagging or dips. Paramount isn’t as hyped as the “S” brands, but I think that’s actually a good thing.
A family member has had a Shifman mattress for nearly 10 years and they still swear by it. It’s definitely on the pricier side but their handcrafted style seems to be more than just marketing fluff. If you go this route, make sure to test the firmness level in-store, they vary a lot between models.
King Koil, from what I have read and briefly tried, feels good initially but some reviews mention faster wear over time compared to the other two. Still, it might depend on the specific line you are looking at.
If durability is your top priority, I do lean toward Paramount or Shifman. And if you are a side sleeper, definitely go for something with a plush top and good zoning for pressure relief.
