Low profile bifold queen mattress for camper

Hello, first time poster here! I am looking for a vertical bi-fold/hinged queen-sized mattress for a camper shell. Both weight and height are limiting factors, so I am looking for something around 4-6 inches thick that weighs less than 50 lbs or so. The mattress would need to fold in half lengthwise to be used on the folding sleeping platform in both “couch” and “sleep” mode (similar to a futon platform, except we would need to lift it up ourselves). Basically, I am looking for something like the Hest dually, but with higher quality foam or even springs.

I was considering latex, but an all latex option is too heavy for our truck’s payload. Memory foam is also not an option b/c we are in Montana and it would get too cold. From reading the super helpful threads on this forum, it sounds like HR foam might be a good option, but I am open to other alternatives. I would ideally like to avoid using a separate topper so that we have fewer pieces to move around and store, but I’m flexible there as well. I haven’t been able to find a vendor that offers an HR foam hinged/bifold queen-sized mattress and that also ships to Montana. While I would prefer to buy something that is ready to go, I would be open to DIY if I could find a hinged/bifold cover (I don’t sew), which I have also been unable to find.

I am a 175-lb side-sleeper with chronic neck/shoulder pain, so both comfort and support are important to me (to the extent possible on a low-profile camper mattress…). My partner is a 200-lb back/combo sleeper. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Hi Lfeinst,

I am not so familiar with RV adventuring. Have you considered a cotton or wool 3 or 4" mattress? 3" cotton futon mattress.

I have no doubt that someone like @EngineeredSleep could come up with a mattress that meets your criteria or @ShovlinMattress mattress too. Both of these folks could just about make you anything.

Hopefully, you can contact either one of them as the use a variety of foams to create their mattresses. Or someone like what oregon fiber mill has to offer.

It may take a couple of phone calls and a conversation with a mattress professional to get it narrowed down to what exactly you need.

Sorry I could not be more help, perhaps someone has been there and done that before regarding RV solutions.
