I bought a 10" sleep ez latex mattress about 18 years ago. I was well over 300 lbs then. It worked well for me. I changed a few layers and bought a new cover over time. Eventually needed new mattress. Decided to try something else because I was not able to physically handle the change out and removal of old mattress. My wife and I use an adjustable bed (2 twin xl) make up a king so we can each have own mattress. A few years ago I bought Sattva mattresses a Zenhaven for my wife and a classic for me. A big selling point was the set up and removal of the mattresses. This didn’t work for me. We switched mattresses but the Zenhaven was not right for me even after I tried adding a latex topper. I am now considering coming back to Sleep Ez for a twin XL 13" mattress. I weigh less now around 285 and 6’1 tall in my late 70’s
with pain in upper thigh and buttocks. Your customization tool suggests 13" with 2 extra firm Dunlop layers on bottom and then Firm Dunlop and then a Firm Talaly. I just wanted to check with an experienced mattress person that this was best set up for my situation. I do not want if I can avoid it switching out and sending back layers to get everything just right. Because I am going to have to hire someone to set the new mattress up and remove the old one. Resources are limited but a good night sleep is worth it. Your opinions and any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hello,
First of all, thank you for keeping SleepEZ in mind again after all these years. We truly appreciate that you had one of our mattresses for such a long time and that it served you well. It means a lot to us that you’re considering coming back to us for your next mattress.
I did review the configuration that our customization tool suggested for you, and generally speaking it is a setup that would normally work well for someone of your height and weight. The two Extra Firm Dunlop layers on the bottom with a Firm Dunlop above them will provide a very strong and supportive base.
That said, because you mentioned experiencing pain in the upper thigh and buttock area, I would personally lean a little softer on the comfort layer than what the configurator suggested.
Instead of the Firm Talalay on top, I would recommend going with a Medium Talalay comfort layer. Talalay latex already does an excellent job of relieving pressure, and choosing the Medium version should help reduce pressure in the hip and upper thigh area without sacrificing support. The Firm and Extra Firm Dunlop layers underneath will still provide plenty of deep support for your current weight.
Another advantage to starting with a slightly softer comfort layer is flexibility. If you begin with the Medium Talalay and later feel that the mattress is a bit softer than you prefer, you can often make the surface feel firmer simply by rearranging the layers inside the mattress. On the other hand, if you start with the Firm Talalay and it ends up feeling too firm for your pressure points, the only way to soften it would be to exchange the layer.
Since you mentioned that physically handling the mattress and layers is difficult and that you will likely need to hire someone to help with setup and removal, starting with the Medium Talalay gives you a better chance of getting the pressure relief you need without having to go through the exchange process.
Based on the information you shared, I am confident that this approach would give you a better balance of support and pressure relief for your situation.
Please feel free to let us know if you have any other questions. We’re always happy to help.
Best regards,
Jeremy

Thank you for the quick response and advice. One additional factor I forgot to mention in
my post was that I sleep on my back. I wanted to raise this if you thought it would change your
opinion of considering a medium Talalay layer over the Firm Talalay? Also if I felt I needed to make the mattress firmer would I just switch the medium Talaly with the Firm Dunlop or some other way? Again thank you for your attention. It is a big purchase and just trying do my best to get it right first time.
Thank you for the additional information. Considering that you also sleep on your back, I would still recommend the Medium Talalay over Firm Talalay as your top two layers. Even when sleeping on your back, your midsection and shoulder blades need proper contouring and pressure relief, which this configuration provides.
You are correct—if you feel the mattress needs to be a bit firmer, you can swap the Medium and Firm Talalay layers. Just keep in mind that placing the Firm Talalay on top of the Medium Talalay will not feel as firm as a true firm setup, because it will still have some give from the Medium Talalay underneath. It will be noticeably firmer than before, but still maintain some pressure relief.
I hope this helps! Keep us posted on how it goes, and don’t hesitate to reach out with any other questions.
