Mattress similar to the Beautyrest Harmony Cypress Bay Plush?

Recently I purchased a queen sized Beautyrest Harmony Cypress Bay Plush Pillow Top mattress. I loved it from the first night I slept on it. Unfortunately, after about the first 30 days, the mattress started to develop a divot where I slept. As my trial period progressed, so did the depth of the divot and I was waking up with a sore back as a result. Sadly, this mattress had to be returned. I considered looking into a different Beautyrest line (Black Series), but due to their return policy, I would be unable to return a second mattress. As much as I initially loved the first mattress, the quality issue was why I returned it, not the comfort, so I didn’t want to be in that situation again and not be able to get out of it, so off to search for another mattress brand.

After much reading and mattress review video watching, I decided to purchase the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Lux in Soft. It got great reviews for side sleepers. I’ve been sleeping on this mattress for a few days now, and it’s one of the hardest mattresses I have ever slept on. I had to double check to make sure I was sent the correct mattress. Sleepless nights tossing and turning and waking up sore. I contacted customer service, and they are sending me a free topper, but I highly doubt this will solve the comfort issue of this mattress. Hate the fact that I’ll have to pay a fee to return it, but it is what it is.

While I have this BB mattress on trial, I am looking for a replacement and stumbled upon this site. Ideally, I would like it to feel as close to the original Beautyrest I purchased, but without the divot. I’m a side sleeper, petite @ 125 lbs. Any recommendations for a plush mattress that actually holds up?
Thanks in advance!

Hey there sleeplessinFL,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround.

It sounds like you’ve had quite a journey finding the right mattress, and I understand how frustrating it can be when comfort doesn’t meet your expectations. I’m not surprised about the divot in your BeautyRest mattress. My mother-in-law had a similar experience with a more current version of their mattresses. I mention “current” because it seems many people have reported issues with these newer models, especially compared to the legacy BeautyRest mattresses, which were known for their top-notch quality.

It seems apparent that despite BeautyRest’s advertising, reputation, and higher price points, these factors don’t necessarily translate into a better-made mattress. The real challenge appears to be the decline in foam quality post Y2K as compared to years prior. This shift has affected the overall experience, regardless of the mattress’s price or the brand’s storied past.

I am also surprised to hear that your experience on the Aurora Luxe soft, led to a mattress that feels firm. I actually tested one myself at a recent trade show and found it to be quite soft, although comfortable for me in the firm. That just goes to show how everyone’s comfort experience is subjective. Of course, I am 95lbs heavier than you too, which would account for the perception of feel on the mattress. The BB Signature Hybrid medium with cloudtop has been a popular choice for petite, lighter weight folks, and in your case, perhaps even their soft version with cloudtop.

The BR you initially purchased, based on what is referenced on their website and others who sell that mattress, suggest that it incorporates 8" of spring support layer, which has a BR rare edge to edge coil construction, which is a positive aspect of its construction, but as a 14.75" mattress, that is almost 7" of foam above the support layer, so I would imagine you would get a great deal of soft sinking plushness from the mattress since your body is so far away from the support layer. The divot could be a consequence of a couple of things. One may be the lower density foams that they tend to use, or issues with your foundation. In my MiLaw’s case, she had a brand new BR foundation, perfectly matched to the mattress, so that was not the cause of her pothole divot that developed in less than a year and a half.

Not wanted to hassle with warranty issues, debating with the store, and emails, photos, multiple measuring and back and forth with Serta-Simmons, I ended up buying her a DLX Premier Hybrid. Granted her preference is toward a firmer mattress feel, but they offer from plush to firm, and now, they even offer latex and memory foam versions. At least in their medium and firmer options, the general feel of the mattress felt comparable to the medium and firmer BR, S&F and aireloom style options out there in the marketplace.

It may be worth a conversation with @DLX as to how plush their plush options are in comparison. As the overall quality and construction of their mattresses have proven to be excellent.

Another avenue to explore is @Magic_Sleeper. When you visit their website, they have a propensity for being able to duplicate popular S and legacy brand mattresses, made with upgraded versions of matching materials and a significantly better warranty.

Hopefully, this will give you a new head start and a few options to consider.

All the best,

Maverick

Thank you for the reply, Maverick!
I originally slept on the Beautyrest while on vacation at rental home. Best sleep I had had in a while, so I stripped the bed to find out the mattress information. Went home and directly contacted Beautyrest to find the closest match to what I slept on (Harmony Meriden Plush Pillow Top), which was no longer on their web site, and they referred me to the Harmony Cypress Bay Plush Pillow Top.
Since posting, I have been walking around on my BB Aurora Lux to try to soften it up. It has helped, but we’re still not there yet. It’s still early in the trial process, so I haven’t given up hope. We’ll also see how it feels with the topper they are sending me, but that seems like a band aide to the problem.

You mentioned a bed foundation. I am using a box spring, although it is not a new boxspring.

I will check out the links that you mentioned and keep gathering information if I do end up having to return the BB Aurora.

Thanks again!

Just check under the box and look for any warping. Of course you need to be on the bed while someone checks the support boards.

Be careful when walking on the mattress. Doing so can help break it in and reduce some of the initial firmness or stiffness of the new materials, similar to breaking in a new pair of shoes. While walking on the mattress won’t damage it, the concentrated weight in one area can potentially harm box springs or bed frames. When you walk on the mattress, it’s best to place it directly on the floor.

Keep in mind that it’s highly unusual for any mattress, even those using lower-density foams, to develop a divot after just 30 days. This might only happen with mattresses made entirely of polyester fiber, which, according to online specifications, is not the case with Beautyrest mattresses that use foam. However, what’s underneath the mattress, such as an old spring, could impact its performance, depending on the type. Even something as simple as a bed frame leg not touching the floor could be causing these issues. Keep in mind that old bed frames and box springs might appear flat and level, but once the mattress and user’s weight are added, they may not provide adequate support. While this isn’t always the case, we estimate that it’s the culprit about 50% of the time so it’s worth investigating.

For most people, the spring unit is the firmest part of the mattress, even with lower-gauge wire. If you have the BB Aurora Lux without the cloud pillowtop, there’s less padding between you and the firm, supportive coil unit compared to the Beautyrest. Although Beautyrest’s specs aren’t listed online, we estimate it has about 6" to 7" of foam padding above the coil unit, based on the overall mattress height. Therefore, the Beautyest should provide a softer, more enveloping feel than the BB.

As for a topper, they can sometimes be perceived as a band-aid solution. However, companies like Hästens, Duxiana, and many others build entire mattress systems around toppers. Our advice is not to worry about it feeling like a band-aid. If a topper makes the mattress comfortable and you like the feel—regardless of any concerns about sleeping on a topper—then it’s the right solution.

If the BB doesn’t work out, please consult with us if you’re considering a DLX. The Premier Hybrid - Soft might be an option to consider, but we want to ensure it’s soft enough and properly supported.Hopefully, BB can make the mattress comfortable and the topper turns out to be a solid fix. Fingers crossed it works like a charm.

Please take a peek at DLX’s reply. It is very informative and offers some great advice and insight.

I really appreciate all the advice and information, and it’s nice to hear a different view on a topper. The mattress is already better than when it first arrived, so your new shoes analogy is spot on. I will definitely look into my box spring and make sure it isn’t contributing and/or causing an issue.
Thank you so much for your input!
