Mattress topper ... sigh.. need help

Hi,
I have a Helix Midnight Luxe mattress medium. I have had it for about 6 months. It is causing some issues in the thoraic rib cage at the back. I wake up very sore. I do have costochondritis too. I have had several toppers on prior mattresses from memory foam to latex. So now looking at the best way to support my ribs on the Helix which is a tad bit firm. But anyway I have looked at Saatva Graphite, Temperpedic ( I had their mattress.. no bueno on the memory foam aspect), Helix topper, many.. I am confused. I also have had 3 spine surgeries in 3 years. So any help to put something on the Helix would be so thankful. * I have read about the Cozy Pure on here and that looks interesting.

I love my wool topper. Something like this, man the plushness of it feels amazing.

Any high GSM wool topper that you see on Amazon that’s a good price and looks like a design you’d enjoy is worth it just to have in my opinion.

You could also do this:

Amazon.com it has options to have it with or without a cover. 2" of soft should help a lot. I do like the cover just to remove that rubbery feel and protect the layer

Hi Mascasa10,

A couple of questions first. What’s your height, weight, and age?

The Helix Midnight Luxe shouldn’t be getting firmer after six months. If anything, it usually relaxes a bit after the first month or two.

Before looking at toppers, I’d want to know exactly what foundation it’s sitting on. What are you using underneath it? I’d also want to know what pillow you’re sleeping on. Problems like this aren’t always caused by the mattress itself. The mattress can definitely be part of it, but when soreness shows up after six months, I start looking at the whole sleep setup instead of assuming the mattress is the culprit.

I’m also curious, did this just start recently, or has it been there since you got the mattress? And do you mostly sleep on your back or your side? Those details can help narrow down whether you’re dealing with a pressure issue or more of an alignment issue.

I also wouldn’t just start cycling through random toppers. The material, firmness, thickness, and how the topper responds all matter. A topper can absolutely help, but the wrong one can just as easily make things worse. Softer isn’t always better. Sometimes adding too much cushioning lets your midsection sink farther into the mattress, which can throw off spinal alignment and create a whole new set of problems.

The CozyPure Noodle topper is a really nice product, but whether it’s the right choice for you depends on what’s actually causing the rib pain. With your history of three spine surgeries and costochondritis, I’d be trying to figure out the root cause before recommending any specific topper.

Personally, with my own back issues, I do best on a flatter, slightly firmer surface that keeps my spine in good alignment on my back, while still having enough give for my shoulders and hips when I sleep on my side.

Hope this helps,

Maverick

Hi there
Thank you for responding.
I am 5’10” about 180 lbs and 67 years old.
There is an adjustable base underneath the helix mattress.
I have tried numerous pillows. Lots. I had heard pillows need to be looked at. The one I have now is a standard queen from mainstays target.
I sleep both on my back and sometimes on my sides. I use the adjustable base to raise the head a bit and feet.
I have had issues with the ribs in spasms with the last mattress. Might have been too soft. I This is a different kind of rib pain sore in the morning. Upper thoracic . I have a nerve stimulator but don’t wear the battery at night. In fact probably going to get that out in September with the nerve surgery planned.
Thank you anything else I can offer up I will. Me

Macasa10,

If you have a nice down comforter or a thicker duvet, try folding it into thirds and placing it underneath your fitted sheet to create a little extra cushioning. If that slight softening makes you more comfortable, then a mattress topper may be worth trying.

Interestingly, someone else was dealing with very similar symptoms and was convinced the mattress was the problem. After reviewing footage from his home camera, he discovered he was actually having nerve spasms during the night. In the end, it appeared the issue may have been related to needing a medication rather than the mattress itself.

I will try that and see what happens. Then get back to you.
