Memory Foam Mattress Help

Hi Ari,

Thanks for your update.

Yes, you are correct, these are DIY component-style mattresses. For a higher BMI, in these configurations, you’d be better off using the Aerus Plus (5lb) memory foam.

Phoenix

Thanks Phoenix …I knew you would say that about the 5lb foam lol

So it would be
10 inches thick mattress
two 3 inch layers of high-density Reflex foam in the core. One layer is rated at 32 ILD and the other at 40 ILD. On top of the core is 4 inch layer of 5lb. Aerus brand memory foam for a total of 4 full inches of memory foam.

Tomorrow I’ll get some specs from sleep warehouse and then hopefully be able to order something

Hi Ari,

You can read me like a book.

OK, now I’m thinking of a number between one and ten…

Phoenix

LOL 5,?!

I am concerned about that reflex foam core. I have read that is not such a great support foam

Off to call sleep warehouse

Ok
Sleep warehouse
I think this sounds better then anything else I have found -
your thoughts please Phoenix?

3" 5lb aerus plus memory foam ild 13
2" 2.25lb hd/hr foam 30ild
3" 2.25 lb hd/hr foam 40 ild
2" 2.25lb hd/hr foam 50 ild

Hi Ari,

It was 7. :frowning:

“Reflex” can be a very durable polyfoam, and is commonly used in different versions as seat cushioning as well. Like any polyfoam, it would depend upon the density (and to a point the IFD/ILD) of the foam.

All of the foam layers listed here are better density and should be durable and wouldn’t set up any “red flags” even for a higher BMI. Whether or not the comfort is to your liking would be of course personal, but objectively these seem to be better quality materials.

Phoenix

I didn’t even have 7 in my head LOL

do you think it sounds very firm? too firm?

i like medium firm with a little contour and i need pressure point relief…concrete slab with no give (hug) i cannot do
any of those layers can be changed

Hi Ari,

Unfortunately, there’s no way I would be able to determine if this configuration would be the “medium firm” with the correct amount of “hug” that you prefer. It certainly will have some contouring on top with the 3" of memory foam, and the polyfoam layers are progressive in their IFD/ILD arrangement. If you do decide to order this, only do so after a detailed phone conversation with the manufacturer so that you may become familiar with any return/exchange options they may offer, and at that time they can also do a better job of relating the level of comfort that this product offers which may be more helpful to you.

Phoenix

I thought it sounded firm. Too firm so sleep warehouse reconfigured it:
3" Aerus Plus 5 lb 13 ILD Memory Foam Topper
3" 2.25 lb 30 ILD HD HR base foam
2" 2.25 lb 40 ILD HD HR base foam
2" 2.25 lb 40 ILD HD HR base foam

As for the RMM which is more expensive
“two 3 inch layers of high-density Reflex foam in the core. One layer is rated at 32 ILD and the other at 40 ILD. On top of the core is 4 inch layer of 5lb. Aerus brand memory foam for a total of 4 full inches of memory foam.”

Wouldn’t 4" of memory foam be pretty thick? I don’t want to get that stuck or hammock feeling and I do want good contour and pressure relief.

Hi Ari,

I thought it sounded firm. Too firm so sleep warehouse reconfigured it:
3" Aerus Plus 5 lb 13 ILD Memory Foam Topper
3" 2.25 lb 30 ILD HD HR base foam
2" 2.25 lb 40 ILD HD HR base foam
2" 2.25 lb 40 ILD HD HR base foam

This would logically be a slightly softer configuration with the extra 1" of the 30 ILD polyfoam and 1" less of the 40 ILD polyfoam. Whether this proves to be a comfort you like will only be able to be determined through your own personal testing.

4" or so is normally near the limit of memory foam I recommend in a mattress. Your level of “feeling stuck” would overall be determined by the finished mattress itself, as all of the layers work together, but the more memory foam you have, the more likely that you might have that sensation.

Phoenix

I don’t think there is much of a return policy unless I never unwrap it
I could buy a different layer and swap it out. SW didn’t give me an exact price but did say the support foam layers are not as expensive as the memory foam layer which is 339 (i think)

My bed in a box options are exhausted , latex isn’t an option. I am out of ideas

Hi Ari,

I’m not sure if you were asking a question or writing rhetorically, but of course nothing has a 100% certainty of success, in-store or online, so just become as familiar as possible with any potential return/exchange policies, and with the configurability, find out some sample costs for typical layer exchanges so that you can have a better idea in case you would want to customize down the road.

Phoenix

I might have been thinking/writing out loud lol

I am working on the layer exchange policies …I can exchange up to 2 base layers but am responsible for shipping

Every day new bed in a box pop up
Quilbed.com the following is the specs they gave me and I asked a few times.
3 inch comfort layer of 4.3 pound Gel foam on the top 24ild
3 inch transition layer is a 3.5 pound density 30 ild
5 inch base layer 2.4 pound density 36ild

Is such a high ild in a top comfort layer possible ? Would that be pressure point relief or hard as heck ?

Hi Ari,

Yes, Quilbed is a recent addition to the boxed-bed category. Ryan Baty, owner of The Mattress Hub in Kansas, is the owner (along with a group of local investors). The address for Quilbed and the corporate office of The Mattress Hub is the same.

The Quilbed is a memory foam mattress. The upper layer is a gel memory foam, and according to your information is 4.3 lb in density. Beneath that is a layer of polyfoam that you were quoted at 3.5 lb density, and then there is a polyfoam core that is 5" at 2.4 lb density. Based upon these specifications there wouldn’t be any “red flags” for most individuals, but I would recommend a 5 lb density memory foam in the upper layer for those of a higher BMI. Quilbed states on their website in the description of the mattress that they adjust the density of the middle transition layer to achieve a softer feel, but in another section of the site for ordering the Ultra Plush version they say that they adjust the upper memory foam layer to achieve a softer comfort, so it’s not completely clear what is changed to achieve a softer feel from their standard version.

At 24, this is a “higher” IFD for memory foam (remember density and IFD are not necessarily correlated with memory foam), but there isn’t one standard for measuring the ILD of memory foam, and there can be variation in the results, as memory foam will relax during the standard one minute hold time when measuring the IFD of the memory foam. Temperature and humidity can also play a role. Regardless, all memory foam will tend to be quite soft with low resilience and high hysteresis.

Phoenix

Thanks Phoenix
I usually see something like 13 ifd for the top layer never 24 so I wondered if it was a mistake
I was told the middle layer changes if you order ultra plush.
Not sure if they are certipur. I was told they are manufactured by diamond mattress and they are on the certipur site.

Hi Ari,

Diamond Mattress is listed on the CeriPUR-US site, but being listed on the CertipUR-US site isn’t a guarantee that all of the products produced in a facility are CertiPUR-US certified. Quilbed isn’t listed on the CertiPUR-US site, not could I find any information on the Quilbed site stating CertipUR-US certification for any of the foams within their mattresses, so if you are considering them you may wish to request more information confirming their certification just to be sure.

I can’t find anything either. Nothing that might even tie them together.

emails go unanswered and the chat person said if I call he/she will answer lol

Hi Ari,

It could be that they have left for the day as far as customer service, so hopefully they will return your emails tomorrow. While they may be using certified foams, it would be nice to have a more concrete confirmation.

Phoenix

it sure would
i sent out one email yesterday , still unanswered and one today not answered
ill let ya know
thanks Phoenix!
