Need a recommendation for a mattress topper

We currently have an extra firm mattress, topped with a 3" PuraSleep Carbon Comfort Memory Foam Topper, from 2017. This model in particular: PuraSleep Carbon Comfort Foam Topper

It has been great until recently, when I’ve started to develop a bit of back pain. I’ll wake up pretty sore, and I’m thinking we need a new topper. I’m 5’9 and about 225lbs, my wife is 5’6’ and about 170lbs. We’re both full time side sleepers. My pain is usually in the mid back, just below the shoulders. I’m using a firm memory foam pillow.

From my reading, it sounds like latex lasts the longest, and I’m willing to spend what it costs for one. However, is this my best choice? And if so, seeing as I need more support, what level of firmness should I get? Also, should I go for a different type of pillow?

Hello PancakesAndCows and thanks for the inquiry and welcome to the forums! I think a Talalay topper is a great choice, for sure. It’s free of any harmful chemicals and should last a very long time. We’d normally recommend soft Talalay for your partner’s side and medium Talalay for your side, though. Regarding the choice between a 2" and 3" topper, the best way to summarize it would be to say that a 2” topper will make the mattress feel moderately softer and the 3” topper will make the mattress feel much softer.
