Hi everyone,
We’re in the market for a new mattress and plan to eventually get an adjustable bed, but that’s a bit out of budget right now to do both. To future-proof, we’re thinking of going with a split king setup (2x Twin XL) so we can swap the mattress cover when we upgrade.
Ideally, we’d love to go with latex but need to keep costs reasonable. Right now, we’re considering:
Base Core Options:
• HD Foam Base Core or
• 14.75g TPS Coils
In reading it seems the foam base might be better due to my weight? Any thoughts or suggestions here?
Comfort Layer Options:
• One 3” Blended Talalay Latex Layer or
• Two 2” Layers blended talalay comfort layer and dunlop transitional layer
Would it make sense to start with the 3” Talalay over the base and add a 2” Dunlop transitional layer later if needed?
Stats:
• Me: 6’2”, 240 lbs, side and back sleeper
• Wife: 5’10”, 160, stomach and side sleeper.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Trying to keep the total under or around $1000.
I would start with a 3" #28 her side and #32 Talalay for your side. If you like some bounce the pocket coils are good but if not then go with the HD core. Latex Mattress Toppers and Cores, All Products, You can always add a transition layer later but I don’t think you will need it.

Thank you for the reply.
Outside of bounce and longevity, are there any other obvious benefits to coils?
Seems like a 6" base foam would save a lot of money. I could do 2.8lb density 36ild foam for just a couple hundred dollars. Would that be a good choice or would I want to maybe choose something firmer like the 50ild lux foam, or a layer of both?
We have a nectar mattress currently that we hate, we are both in our 30s but I have been waking up with hip and back pain frequently with this mattress and as of recent i have been sleeping on a cheap but firmer mattress from amazon in our guest room as a result.
Most prefer to have less bounce so the 36 foam core would be better and much less motion transfer. 50 ILD you might as well sleep on the floor.
